PRIMARY FUNCTION: This position is also responsible for all food service operations, management and sanitation within the Steward Division.The Chief Steward, OS, Wiper, Food Handler, works as a lead meal planner for all food and beverage services onboard the vessel. Also serves as a watch stander or day worker in the Deck Department during non sea going periods when meals are not served.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
As a watch stander while in port stands gangway watches as directed, maintaining alertness always.As a day worker, performs general maintenance, repair, sanitation and upkeep of material, equipment, and areas in the Deck Department.Assists with general maintenance and upkeep of galley equipment.Possesses knowledge of the location and use of emergency equipment, lifesaving equipment, damage control equipment, and safety equipment.Performs all operations connected with the launching of life saving equipment and makes security inspections of the ships.Ensures that onboard food service operations meet the highest standards of preparation, production, presentation, fiscal responsibility and accountability for up to 50 personnel daily.Responsible for the maintenance of all physical spaces assigned to the Steward Division.SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This job has no supervisory responsibilities. This position has the responsibility and authority to carry out assigned tasks.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:
Strong background in culinary arts or DOD equivalent.Intermediate computer skills specifically using Microsoft Office Suite; ability to learn additional computer skills or software programs. Working knowledge of advanced software applications is preferred.Ability to understand and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.Ability to generate routine reports and correspondence.Interpersonal skills are necessary to work effectively and cooperatively with all levels of management and staff. Will also routinely interact with other crew members.Ability to use general office equipment such as fax, phone, copier, scanner, printers, etc.Ability to follow a process.Strong professional customer service skills, including active listening, prompt service and follow-up.Strong decision analysis and problem-solving skills; ability to draw conclusions and justify decisions. Must be able to communicate issues to management.Ability to learn and understand corporate policies and procedures and how they relate to goals.Ability to perform basic mathematical computations.High degree of self-motivation and the ability to work independently.Ability to multi-task.QUALIFICATIONS:
High School diploma or equivalentMust be a valid United States citizen of at least 18 years of age and possess and maintain valid: U.S. Passport with a minimum of seven (7) months remaining before expiration date;United States Coast Guard (USCG) Merchant Mariner’s Credential (MMC), with a minimum of ten (10) months remaining before expiration date.Must be capable of carrying items up to 40 pounds and on heavier items must seek assistance of other workers or weight lifting devices.Must be capable of wearing cumbersome PPE for Hazardous Material (HAZMAT) operations.Must be able communicate using the English language.Must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States.Must possess basic computer skills.Must have a valid driving licenseMust have the ability to obtain and maintain a Government Secret Security ClearancePREFERENCE STATEMENT
