Child Care Substitute Teacher
Statement of the job: The University of Maine at Farmington (UMF) seeks applicants to fill the position of Substitute Teacher. This position is responsible for assisting in the implementation of a developmentally appropriate preschool program in a childcare setting, as well as assisting with the supervision of UMF practicum students, interns, and work-study students. This position works closely with children, families, UMF students, and faculty. Essential Duties + Protects the safety of all children in the center and monitors children closely. + Communicates and interacts with children during care taking routines and free engagement time. + Manages the classroom effectively to encourage student participation, minimize distractions, and maintain a positive learning environment. + Exhibits sensitive and responsive caregiving, reading and responding to children’s cues and needs, and facilitating independence and the development of self-help skills when appropriate. + Exhibits behavior management consistent with Sweatt-Winter philosophy, including recognizing and identifying difficult feelings, redirection, setting up the environment to minimize stress and conflict, and positively reinforcing children while engaging positively with others. + Interacts with children during play activities both indoors and on the playground. + Treats parents and children with dignity and respect, recognizing the cultural and socioeconomic diversity of the population. + Adapts teaching methods to fit the needs of each student.
