Summary:
The Virginian-Pilot/Daily Press seeks a driven and digitally proficient City Reporter to cover Newport News and Hampton. This role requires strong news judgment, collaborative skills, and a passion for impactful journalism. You will be part of a dynamic team committed to serving a large and diverse audience across various platforms.
What you will do:
Cover Newport News and Hampton, building a strong beat through effective sourcing and engaging with both those in power and those impacted by their decisions
Deliver a variety of content, including breaking news, features, and in-depth stories, while utilizing audience engagement metrics to enhance your work
Collaborate with the audience, data, and visuals teams to optimize content and produce data-driven visualizations
Thrive in a fast-paced environment, producing diverse content formats such as photos, web updates, and print stories
What you will bring:
Strong news judgment, collaborative approach, and commitment to accuracy and speed
A deep understanding of city beat reporting, including its diverse range of story opportunities
Digital proficiency and experience using audience engagement metrics to inform content strategy
Ability to collaborate effectively with various teams, including audience, data, and visuals
Adaptability to a fast-paced environment and capability to produce diverse content formats
A college degree and preferably at least two years of experience in daily journalism

Conditions of Employment:

Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and have reliable transportation
Travel – This position entails occasional driving for work assignments, training sessions, and/or in-person meetings. The employee will be responsible for transporting themselves between different sites as needed
Must be available for shift work. May be required to work various hours for coverage outside of normal business hours
