THE POSITION
The Department of Transportation is looking to hire a Civil Engineer (Transportation) to undertake various engineering tasks related to the design and analysis of the District's structures. This role involves creating plans for maintenance, rehabilitation, and new construction projects. The engineer will support the review and approval process for local bridge inspections and prioritize maintenance within the District. Additionally, the position serves as an aide to the Local Bridge Coordinator and Maintenance Squad Leader, tackling unique challenges and reviewing completed work for precision and compliance with technical standards. Responsibilities also include retrieving and entering data into the Bridge Maintenance and Management Systems. Apply today!
DESCRIPTION OF WORK
In this role, you will be responsible for creating plans for the replacement of superstructures on plank beams, developing maintenance repair strategies, and planning for the replacement of maintenance box culverts. You will provide support to the Local Bridge Project Manager by assisting in the development of the Engineering and Construction Management System (ECMS), drafting paper agreements, and formulating federal reimbursement agreements. Your responsibilities will also include monitoring inspection costs and budgeting for inspections, as well as ensuring compliance with the National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS) for all inspection agreements. Additionally, you will review and approve County Maintenance work plans, as well as all local bridge inspection reports and load ratings. Your design work will encompass reinforced concrete box culverts, simple span steel bridges, reinforced concrete structures, and prestressed concrete bridges, including their foundations and substructures such as abutments and retaining walls. You will operate independently within the framework of established technical standards and specifications, and may participate in or conduct field views for minor projects to ascertain design requirements. Your duties will also involve conducting various bridge deck tests, including Pachometer, Half Cell, Chloride Ion Test, and Delamination Mapping. As the team leader during the preparation of bridge rehabilitation plans, you will inspect structural members, foundation supports, and components to determine the necessary rehabilitation work. You will prepare design submissions, including Hydrologic and Hydraulic Reports, Type, Size, and Location Reports, and Foundation Approvals, with guidance from the Squad Leader and in accordance with Design Manuals and Technical Guidelines. Furthermore, you will review design submissions from consultant engineers for completeness and accuracy, perform engineering computations and stress analyses, and engage in design work for both new structures and the rehabilitation of existing bridges. Your role will also involve maintaining and updating computer programs, conducting complex computer analyses related to hydraulics, bridge geometry, and component design, and interpreting the results for structural design while collecting data and analyzing existing bridges.
