The Department of Developmental Services (DDS) is seeking a dynamic, highly organized, mission driven individual to fill the role of Civil Engineer VI. The selected candidate will perform professional civil engineering duties involving work of considerable complexity, involving considerable latitude for independent judgment, and un-reviewed action.
The Civil Engineer VI will plan, design, and prepare detailed drawings, specifications, and cost estimates. The ideal candidate will work under the general supervision of an engineer of a higher grade who gives general instructions, makes decisions on major policy matters, and reviews the work for effectiveness.
Duties and Responsibilities (these duties are a general summary and not all inclusive):
Directs the preparation and/or reviews of engineering plans and specifications for complex projects.Reviews and approves drawings and specifications of engineers of a lower grade working for the Department.Supervises and participates in the examination of preliminary and final plans/specifications for DDS building projects, utility and horizontal construction projects, and environmental remediation projects. Projects may include but not be limited to power plants, water supply, and sewage disposal work scheduled to be constructed or renovated at the various DDS facilities.Determine if the plans/specifications provide for the function and effectiveness of the project, are clear and complete for competitive bidding, and employ materials that are durable and, at the same time, not too costly.Inspects construction, renovation, and repair projects for DDS to determine conformance with the requirements of the plans/specifications; represents DDS at capital construction projects.Plans, designs, and prepares detailed plans, specifications, and cost estimates for construction projects and environmental remediation projects of considerable complexity for new construction, repair, and/or renovation of existing facilities at the various DDS facilities; reviews and approves shop drawings for such projects. Said designs may include incorporating designs and reports prepared by third-party consultants. Represents DDS at conferences and hearings with other state agencies relative to all assigned major capital outlay projects. Responsible for chairing meetings, as necessary.Confers with the managers of facilities and other administrators relative to budget estimates and future DDS facilities and provides engineering expertise and counsel to facility staff.Verifies and processes construction payment requests to prepare correspondence to other agencies, designers, and construction firms and to prepare engineering reports. Makes surveys of buildings and utility systems to determine their suitability condition, safety, renovation costs, needed repairs, and other necessary factors; provides recommendations based on such surveys.Required Qualifications:

I. An Associate's degree with a major in civil engineering or civil engineering technology may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required (A) experience.
II. A Bachelor's degree with a major in civil engineering or civil engineering technology, may be substituted for a maximum of two years of the required (A) experience.
III. A Graduate degree with a major in civil engineering may be substituted for a maximum of two years of the required (A) experience and one year of the required (B) experience
NOTE: The terms civil engineering and civil engineering technology include related engineering disciplines, such as construction, survey, hydraulics, design, transportation, structural, soils, sanitary, environmental, drafting, highway, architectural, mining, airport and materials.
Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.
