Civil Estimator Job Description The Civil Estimator will be responsible for performing accurate quantity takeoffs from project plans and specifications. This involves analyzing construction drawings, identifying materials and quantities needed for the project, and estimating costs based on the takeoff measurements. The Estimator will also prepare and submit competitive bids for construction projects, develop detailed cost estimates, create bid proposals, and price out labor, materials, equipment, and subcontractor costs. Additionally, the Estimator will conduct cost analysis and feasibility studies to assess the financial implications of construction projects, collaborate closely with project teams, and stay updated on industry trends. Responsibilities + Perform accurate quantity takeoffs from project plans and specifications. + Analyze construction drawings and identify materials and quantities needed for the project. + Estimate costs based on the takeoff measurements. + Prepare and submit competitive bids for construction projects. + Develop detailed cost estimates and create bid proposals. + Price out labor, materials, equipment, and subcontractor costs. + Conduct cost analysis and feasibility studies to assess the financial implications of construction projects. + Evaluate project scope, materials pricing, labor costs, overhead expenses, and profit margins. + Work closely with project managers, engineers, subcontractors, and clients to gather project requirements, clarify specifications, and address cost-related inquiries. + Participate in pre-bid meetings and negotiate pricing with vendors. + Communicate effectively with stakeholders throughout the bidding process. + Utilize Microsoft Excel to create and maintain spreadsheets for estimating purposes, organize project data, calculate costs, and generate reports. + Leverage Excel functions and formulas to streamline the estimating process and ensure accuracy in bid preparation. + Stay informed about industry trends, market conditions, and pricing fluctuations for construction materials and services. + Monitor industry benchmarks, analyze historical data, and leverage industry insights to improve estimating accuracy and competitiveness. Essential Skills + 5-10 years of experience in civil construction estimation and bidding. + Proficiency in performing quantity takeoffs from construction plans and specifications. + Strong knowledge of civil construction, including highways, bridges, and earth moving. + Experience with cost analysis and feasibility studies. + Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and the ability to use Excel functions and formulas for estimating purposes. + Experience with PlanSwift and Microsoft Project. Additional Skills & Qualifications + Background in civil construction/land development. + Experience bidding jobs up to $5 million + A degree in civil engineering or building science is preferred but not required if experience is sufficient. + Strong organizational skills and experience in creating bids from Excel. Work Environment The Civil Estimator will work primarily in an office environment with occasional site visits. The typical schedule is roughly 7 AM to 5 PM with some flexibility.
