As the everyday faces of GFL, our Solids Residential Drivers interact with residential communities on a day-to-day basis, and perform tasks that make those communities safer and cleaner places to live.
The primary focus of this role is to collect and transport waste from assigned residential routes to our GFL facilities, where they then properly dispose of all materials. In addition to operating side-load or rear-pack trucks, Drivers are also required to assist Helpers in lifting trash and recyclables into the truck — making it a bit more physically demanding.
A day in the life* of a Residential Driver:
Upon arriving to work, meet with the team, assess all equipment and upcoming routes, and prepare for the day aheadYour morning tasks may include:Operating a waste collection vehicle along designated routes mechanically collecting wasteTransporting all collected solid waste to post-collection facilitiesAssisting Collection Helpers in loading waste into truckManeuvering truck in and out of minimum clearance spacesUsing a key map and GPS to locate service addressesFollowing safe operating practices, including lock out or tag out procedures Submitting pre-trip and post-trip inspections and/or vehicle condition reportsInteracting with customers or general public in a courteous manner along designated routeNotifying management of any issues along collection routePerform afternoon tasks, either continuing tasks from the morning or starting new ones, guaranteeing compliance with applicable regulations and standards*schedule may vary depending on the day-to-day, start time, etc.
What’s required:
Solids Residential Drivers must meet the following qualifications:
High school diploma or general education degree (GED)Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), Class [specific qualification - recruiter to update]Minimum 1 year of commercial driving experience OR CDL school certificateControl operations of equipment; maneuvering truck in and out of spaces, using mirrors to back distances of approximately 120 feet or moreKnowledge of trucks, their components, and the basic maintenance requirements for safe operationExert physical effort including pushing, pulling, bending and lifting items up to 50 lbs.Use fine motor coordination with arm, hand, finger and leg dexterityAbility to kneel, crawl and climbSitting is required 75% of the timeOther advantages to working at GFL:
