Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit The Bachelor of Science in Information Science (BSIS) program is housed in the Department of Information, Library and Research Sciences. The BSIS program was created to empower its graduates to enter the growing field of information and technology related jobs. Started in 2020, the program has grown rapidly, from 6 students in its first term to 79 majors in Fall of 2024. Building on a shared foundation in information science, graduates from the program develop a variety of specialties based in one of four concentrations. Position Summary The Department of Information, Library, & Research Sciences (ILRS) at the University of North Carolina Greensboro invites applications and nominations for a Clinical Assistant Professor. The successful candidate will serve primarily undergraduate students in the Bachelor of Science in Information Science (BSIS) program which is rapidly growing and is housed in the School of Education on the main campus in Greensboro, NC. This position is a professional track, 9-month appointment for a three-year term, renewable pending availability of funding. Clinical faculty members have assigned responsibilities in teaching and service. The position will be effective August 1, 2025; salary is commensurate with qualifications within the range of $65,000 to $77,000.

This position will join two existing members serving as primary instructors for core and concentration classes. In addition, this job will involve engaging in outreach to build relationships with the community and recruit new students from local high schools and community colleges. The successful candidate will also serve as an academic advisor to a portion of the undergraduate program. There are additional undergraduate teaching opportunities in eSports and Game Studies, in the ALA accredited Master of Library & Information Science (MLIS), The Master of Science in Instructional Technology and Design (MSITD), and Educational Research, Methodology (ERM) programs.

Expertise in Information Science, Computer Science, or Information Systems is required. Preference will be given to candidates with expertise related to the development and deployment of Deep Learning or Artificial Intelligence systems, or in other emerging areas of information science, data science, or data analytics. Additional experience in teaching programming languages or technology is also desirable, especially in languages like SQL, Python, and R, related to data analytics. Online teaching experience is desirable but not required.

Responsibilities Delivering high caliber face to face, synchronous and asynchronous modalities of teaching. Developing courses for the B.S. in Information Science. Engaging in student recruitment, particularly with high schools and community colleges. Contributing to the expansion of program infrastructure, including development for student scholarships and creating additional relationships with industry for field placement. Advising students. Engaging in the Department, School, and University service. Supporting in assisting undergraduate students with career development and building skills in lifelong learning. Practicum supervision. Minimum Qualifications This position requires a Ph.D. in Information Science, Information Systems, Computer Science, or related field or master’s degree in Information Science, Information Systems, Computer Science, or related field, with at least 5 years professional experience in the field. Consideration will be given to candidates who have not yet earned their doctorate at the time of application, but who are engaged in an active doctoral program, have successfully completed comprehensive exams, and anticipate successful completion of remaining work within a year after the start date. Preferred Qualifications Experience in teaching and advising undergraduates is essential to this position, as is a commitment to face to face education along with flexibility in a variety of educational delivery modes. The ideal candidate will have: Background in Computer Science, Data Science, Deep Learning, Natural Language Processing, Artificial Intelligence, Human Computer Interaction, or Undergraduate Research. Strong preference for applicants who have an earned doctorate in a computer science or other technology related field. Either demonstrated skill in programming language or demonstrated deep knowledge and application of data science to information and communication technologies. Experience in the educational enrichment of undergraduates through extracurricular activities.
