Clinical Cytogenetic Scientist

Medical Center: Laboratory Core- (Full-Time, Day Shift) -

 

Job Summary: Under direction, the Clinical Cytogenetic Scientist analyzes chromosomes found in biological specimens such as amniotic fluids, bone marrow, and blood to aid in the study, diagnosis, or treatment of genetic diseases. The position interprets high complexity tests and reports results following standard operating procedures for patient specimens, proficiency samples, and quality control. In addition, the position uses various laboratory techniques to analyze chromosomal structures. Performs other duties as needed.

Education and Experience: Bachelor's Degree in Biological or Clinical Laboratory Science. Master's Degree in Genetics or Biological Sciences preferred. One (1) year of experience as a clinical cytogenetics is preferred.

Knowledge and Skills: Knowledge of cytogenetics and molecular cytogenetics including culturing, harvesting, slide prep and staining, microscopy, karyotyping and FISH (fluorescent in situ hybridization); analysis and interpretation of test results; software and equipment related to cytogenetics. Knowledge of regulatory standards, general office software, and equipment. Skill to apply knowledge of cytogenetics and molecular cytogenetics to gather, analyze and interpret complex data, make determinations, and document results. Skill to use software and equipment related to cytogenetics to prepare and analyze biological specimens and summarize findings; exercise initiative, judgment, problem solving, and decision making. Skill to use general office software and equipment to develop reports, aggregate data, and communicate with staff and patients. Ability to maintain valid Clinical Cytogenetics License; be familiar with the more than 20 different methods for visualizing chromosomes; independently solve problems; work calmly and respond courteously when under pressure. Ability to collaborate and accept direction, think critically, manage multiple assignments effectively, organize and prioritize workload. Ability to work well under pressure; problem solve, recall information with accuracy; pay close attention to detail; work independently with minimal supervision. Distinguish colors as necessary, hear sufficiently for general conversation in person and on the telephone, and identify and distinguish various sounds associated with the workplace. Ability to see adequately to read computer screens, and written documents necessary to the position.

Licensures and Certifications: Current State of California Clinical Cytogeneticist Scientist license.
