Clinical Engineer

Manages the inspection, testing, calibration repairs and preventative maintenance on clinical and non-clinical hospital equipment and systems.  Researches and implements innovative and new technologies within the facility.

Researches new equipment and provides recommendation prior to purchase. Responsible for maintenance records of testing, calibration and repairs of clinical and other equipment as designated to meet requirements of regulatory agencies, and to establish frequency of repair histories to be used to recommend equipment for repair or replacement. Reads equipment operating and repair manuals describing proper equipment operation, repair calibration and procedures to perform required duties. Fills out work requests as needed. Instructs/assists hospital personnel in the proper use, operation, testing and repair of hospital equipment to promote safe, effective and efficient use of resources. Identifies and initiates requests for test equipment, calibration devices, replacement parts, manuals and other material required for the completion of job tasks. Reads and interprets technical journals pertaining to product hazard, recalls, modifications and other actions pertaining to the operation and maintenance of equipment within the hospital. Reviews service contracts in conjunction with the Manager/Supervisor of Engineering with emphasis on deferring the same. Reviews annually and adheres to all state, federal, and local laws and standards as they relate to the ethical and legal compliance plans and policies. Installs, repairs, calibrates and maintains equipment using appropriate test devices in conjunction with manufacturer’s manuals, proper troubleshooting techniques and preventive maintenance manuals. Designs and/or constructs instruments or devices as required for updating and testing of hospital equipment. Modifies or updates medical equipment as instructed by the manufacturer. Maintains high standards of equipment performance and safety to protect patients and employees of the hospitalOperates test equipment from simple voltmeter to complex signal acquisition devices effectively.Assumes emergency on-call responsibilities as assigned. Participates in or leads educational programs, in-service meetings and department meetings as required to advance the knowledge and skills of the Clinical Engineer Group to keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

BS strongly preferred, AS minimum in Electrical Engineering Technology, an Allied Science, or equivalent. Certification as Biomedical Equipment Technician (CBET) or eligibility for certification.
