Clinical Ethicist will be helping develop and expand the ethics service line for Fargo. Looking for a candidate with experience completing and resolving ethics consults and ethical issues in a clinical setting. Master's degree with a certification in healthcare ethics is preferred. Will also help lead the local Clinical Ethics Committee and education for clinicians within the Fargo Region.Summary

Demonstrates knowledge of ethical practices and promotes ethical/moral deliberation in the areas of shared decision making with patients, beginning and end of life care, privacy and confidentiality, professionalism in patient care, resource allocation, research and organizational ethics. Participates on the Biomedical Ethics Committee, Nursing Ethics Committee, and other affiliated or ad hoc committees as required or assigned. Participates effectively as a committee member by reading preparation materials, engaging actively in discussion, evaluating and educating involved parties on the ethical dimensions of the concern.
Demonstrates the ability to provide and complete ethics consultations with the hospital and outpatient setting. Listens well and communicates interest, respect, support and empathy of involved parties. Gathers relevant information. Educates involved parties regarding the ethical dimensions of the consultation. Elicits the moral views of the involved parties and is able to represent those moral views to others. Facilitates and demonstrates effective communication practices. Identifies appropriate decision makers. Helps identify a range of ethically acceptable options. Strives for resolution of the issues or conflict. Provides professional narrative, and documentation of consults when appropriate, capturing the values question or moral uncertainty being addressed.
Maintains personal knowledge and is able to research moral theory as it pertains to healthcare ethics and bioethical issues that typically emerge in healthcare settings. Understands the clinical context, legal, regional, and institutional policies and procedures as well as relevant codes of ethics. Will participate in program planning, policy formation and evaluation. Actively participates in the group practice council and on committees to complete the work of the department and measure outcomes. Serves as a role model to students. Communicates concerns in appropriate forums and participates in decision-making processes. Provides education and in-services as needed. Shares research articles and other resource information with team as appropriate. Integrates research into personal and group practice. Plans conferences, develops, provides, and presents education on topics in bioethics to committees, colleagues, staff, and community. Effectively uses educational strategies and materials appropriate to the audience. Participates in orientation and mentors new staff and students.
Qualifications
Master’s degree preferred, Bachelor’s degree accepted with Healthcare Ethics Consultant Certification (HEC-C) within one year of hire. Prefer field of study in one of the following: medical ethics, social work, nursing, chaplaincy or bioethics.
Two years’ experience in healthcare/hospital ethics.
Bioethics endorsement of education/certificate preferred.
