The clinical extern program employs learners from various disciplines (such as nursing, medicine, respiratory therapy, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, and paramedics) as unregulated health care providers who support clinical teams across Hamilton Health Sciences sites.
The Clinical Extern – Occupational Therapy Learner is an integral member of the healthcare team, as an unregulated care provider. As part of the interprofessional healthcare team, the Clinical Extern will support high quality care for patients and families, while demonstrating a commitment to excellence in supporting the patient and family experience. Clinical externs are involved in delivering care to our patients, which include assisting in personal care including feeding, dressing and toileting, promoting patient safety through falls risk assessments and skin assessments, help with repositioning, transfers and ambulation, and other interventions that are assigned or delegated to them by the interprofessional team. Clinical Externs will work under the direct/indirect supervision of an Extern Coordinator.
The Clinical Extern position is open to Occupational Therapy Students enrolled in a recognized Occupational Therapy program.
