Clinical Extern - Respiratory Therapist

The Adult Regional Care Program at the Hamilton General Hospital (HGH) provides expert care within outside of the HNHB LHIN in specialty services such as Cardiac and Vascular, Neurosciences and Medicine, Trauma, Emergency and Critical Care, Burns, Hyperbaric Care and Regional Rehabilitation.
The Juravinski Hospital and Cancer Centre (JHCC) is tertiary level facility supporting multiple clinical programs including the Regional Programs for Central-South Ontario and provides specialized care to the cardiac surgical, oncology, orthopedic, medical and surgical patient populations.
McMaster Children’s Hospital (MCH) serves the special and unique healthcare needs of children 0-17 years using a family-centred model of care.
The Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) Departments at the HGH, JHCC and MCH sites specialize in cardio/respiratory management of Adult and Pediatric patients in the emergency department, critical care, perioperative areas, the rapid response team and general wards. RRTs support patients with invasive mechanical ventilation, non-invasive mechanical ventilation, oxygen therapy, artificial airway management, application of medical gases, bronchoscopy and other specialized therapeutic procedures, diagnostic testing, internal and external transports, patient education, clinical-based preceptorship for Respiratory Therapy students, research etc.

The RT Extern is an integral member of the healthcare team, working collaboratively with the support of a Clinical Extern Coordinator as an unregulated care provider, in the HGH, JHCC or MCH Respiratory Therapy Departments. The RT Extern responsibilities include working under the direction of a RRT to support high quality care for patients and families, while demonstrating a commitment to excellence in supporting the patient and family experience. A RT Extern would bring beginner level experience and knowledge in respiratory therapy principles, RT equipment, respiratory supplies, medical gas management, cleaning, calibration and non-clinical secretarial and/or customer service support.

The RT Extern position is open to Respiratory Therapy Students enrolled in their 2nd and 3rd year of a CRTO approved diploma Respiratory Therapy program. Externs will be hired on a temporary casual part-time basis until September 2025.
