Clinical Faculty - Mechanical Engineering
University of St. Thomas
OVERVIEW
The Mechanical Engineering Department in the School of Engineering invites applications for a full-time clinical faculty position to begin in Fall semester 2025.
Background
This is an exciting time for growth in the Mechanical Engineering program at St. Thomas. In spring 2024, we moved into the new $110M Schoenecker Center with state-of-the-art engineering labs, including a prototyping center, robotics and automation lab, and an advanced materials lab, as well as an expansion of our Manufacturing & Machining Center. As a student-focused institution with a strong hands-on curriculum, we emphasize undergraduate and graduate education that provides technical excellence with a significant emphasis on real world applications.
Clinical faculty at the University of St. Thomas are qualified in a given field or discipline by having established records as accomplished practitioners or by having made significant contributions to the arts, sciences or their profession. Clinical appointments are non-tenure track appointments for committed faculty with a passion for teaching and administrative service. Additional information specifically for prospective new faculty at St. Thomas can be found athttps://www.stthomas.edu/jobs/for-faculty/index.html.
Role and Responsibilities
The primary role of the clinical faculty in Mechanical Engineering will include instructing and developing the Machine Design Lab. This lab teaches students advanced mechanics theories (e.g. static and dynamic failure) and the function of basic machine components (e.g. bearings, linkages, cams, and gears) through a semester-long design project completed in the lab.
Other duties will be assigned which match the successful candidate’s background, and may include instruction of other labs, advising a Senior Design team, or taking an instructional role in the first-year courses “Introduction to Engineering” and “Mechanical Engineering Graphics.”
At all levels, from first-year to senior, the clinical faculty will advise and mentor students toward the successful completion of their degree and help them develop career readiness. The clinical faculty will participate in departmental meetings, faculty development programs, and professional organizations in mechanical engineering to stay connected with industry advancements.
