DescriptionINTERVENTIONAL PSYCHIATRY FELLOWSHIP
The Interventional Psychiatry Fellowship at Emory University/Emory Healthcare consists of a year-long advanced clinical and academic experience in treatment resistant depression and complex psychiatric illness incorporating a range of advanced therapeutic modalities. The Fellow will receive direct supervision from experienced faculty members holding local, national, and international leadership roles in this field. Interventional psychiatry is a growing field that involves invasive and non-invasive brain stimulation technologies as well as novel pharmacological approaches.
Fellowship applicants must have satisfactorily completed an ACGME-accredited General Psychiatry residency prior to entering the program. The candidate will be board certified/eligible at the time of application. A strong applicant will have an interest in both patient care and clinical research.

The fellowship encompasses four areas of emphasis.
Clinical experience-
The fellowship will include inpatient and outpatient clinic consultations. The Fellow will become specialized in the diagnosis, psychopharmacological, and device-based interventions of treatment resistant psychiatric disorders. Neuromodulation instruction will be hands-on, permitting the fellow to gain knowledge and proficiency with prescribing and administering treatment in high-volume, high-acuity clinical services. The treatment modalities include electroconvulsive therapy (ECT); ketamine infusions; esketamine; transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS); vagus nerve stimulation (VNS); and deep brain stimulation (DBS).
Didactic learning experience-
The Fellow will participate in didactics and journal clubs on a variety of topics. These include current scientific understanding of treatment resistant depression, assessment, and management of psychiatric patients in brain stimulation treatment, psychopharmacology in interventional psychiatry, prescribing and administering electroconvulsive therapy, transcranial magnetic stimulation, vagus nerve stimulation, intravenous ketamine, esketamine, and deep brain stimulation. The Fellow will attain practical experience in assessment, recommending treatments for patients, and post-treatment management.
Teaching-
The Fellow will have direct involvement with medical students, residents, and visiting physicians in the theoretical and practical aspects of interventional psychiatry. They will have the opportunity to present formal lectures, lead group discussions, and case presentations. The Fellow will also organize and present at monthly Journal Club.
Research-
The Fellow will participate in on-going clinical research studies. Emory Interventional Psychiatry participates in both federal and industry-sponsored trials. The Fellow is encouraged to develop their own research interest and will be supported by mentors. The expectation will include submission of abstracts and presentations at national meetings and publication of literature related to the discipline.
