This is an opening at the State Lab in Ankeny, IA. When babies are born at the hospital they get a prick in their heel to gather a blood sample to be sent off for testing and this is the team that is checking the blood specimens for potential inherited disorders that need to be treated quickly. This group is the only department at the lab that is 24/7 but it is important that they get these samples tested right away to determine if treatment is needed for newborns. The Lab in Ankeny tests all the newborn samples for Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota and Alaska. The blood samples are dried on a card when they reach the facility for analysis.

Shift - overnights - they work a 5 on, 4 off schedule so it will rotate so candidates need to be comfortable working weekends and holidays. The manager said the lab is flexible around specific weekend off requests so they will work to accommodates those situations. Most people really like the rotation because having 4 days off allows them to feel like they can still do things in their days off during the day as it allows for some extra time to adjust their sleep. Turns out to be working only about 3 weeks of every month which people enjoy!

Hours: 9:30PM-7:30AM.

Training - first week or 2 on days 8:00-4:30 before moving to night shift

Team culture - will work with about 7 people. They have 3 separate testing areas - will rotate between the testing areas but will stick in one testing area for the whole shift and move to the next testing area the next night.
