GENERAL SUMMARY AND PURPOSE:
Performs tests related to the diagnosis and treatment of patients by utilizing various medical laboratory procedures in the Clinical Laboratory. Correlates and integrates other patient data when interpreting test results. Uses professional judgment and has an in-depth knowledge of laboratory techniques, scientific principles, quality control, and instrument maintenance.
Must recognize problems, identify causes and determines alternative methods and solutions. Works under the supervision of a Medical Technologist at all times and must have all testing reviewed by a Medical Technologist.
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Associate degree required; Associate of Science preferred. 1 year of experience in a clinical laboratory preferred.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Demonstrates knowledge and skills to competently care for all assigned age groups (Neonate, Child, Adolescent, Adult, and Geriatric as applicable).
Demonstrates compliance with hospital and laboratory safety policies and procedures. Maintains a clean and safe work environment. Disposes of waste according to laboratory policies.
Performs and records scheduled QC. Notifies a technologist when QC data is outside established limits and takes corrective action as directed.
Performs and records routine maintenance of equipment. Recognizes and documents malfunctions and immediately notifies a technologist.
Monitors supply inventory and takes appropriate action to ensure that needed supplies are readily available.
Demonstrates ability to verify specimen integrity and suitability before testing.
Accurately performs assigned low and moderately complex testing procedures according to established protocols under the supervision of a medical technologist.
Reports test results accurately and appropriately under the supervision of a technologist. Reports critical test results to physician, nursing station, or physician’s office according to established protocol.
Effectively prioritizes work to maintain maximum efficiency. Uses spare time to assist other areas as needed.
Performs phlebotomy according to laboratory policies and procedures.
Communicates effectively with medical technologists, supervisors and pathologists.
Demonstrates capability of identifying problems (technical and instrumental) that may adversely affect accurate test performance. Immediately corrects the problem or notifies senior technologist or a laboratory coordinator.
Recognizes non-standard situations (mislabeled or unsuitable specimens, bizarre or abnormal results) and notifies a medical technologist and resolves the situation as directed. Performs routine office and computer functions in order to follow patient testing from order entry to result. Serves as a backup to Central Processing by assisting with specimen receipt and specimen tracking.
