Beth Israel Deaconess Milton is seeking a full-time Clinical Laboratory Assistant I/Phlebotomy. This position is 40 hours per week; day shifts, Monday through Friday, one weekend per month and holiday rotation. POSITION FUNCTION: Under the supervision and direction of the Manager, Supervisor, Laboratory site or designee, Accurately and efficiently obtain venous or capillary blood specimens from patients for use in laboratory testing following Laboratory policies and procedures, transport the specimen to the laboratory, perform pre-analytic processing procedures, and complete all associated documentation both written and computerized. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Accurately follow physician orders when ordering the test(s) in the Laboratory computer system. Determine and implement the appropriate course of action when unsure of an order or specimen required prior to obtaining the sample. Accurately document all pertinent patient demographic and insurance information if performing the registration function. Independently obtain venous blood specimens from patients. Properly identify the patient according to policy each and every time. Perform the specimen collection in a manner appropriate for the population of the patient being served. Obtain appropriate and suitable specimens for the tests ordered. Receive specimens in the Laboratory computer system and distribute them in accordance with the urgency of the test requested. Prepare specimens according to the procedure for the test requested and store specimens at the appropriate storage temperature, if not immediately distributed. Competently perform EKG’s on outpatients. Maintain competencies (position specific and hospital-wide) required for the specific patient population served. Answer telephone according to Laboratory policy, take and relay messages accurately to the appropriate person. Assist callers with questions either answering their questions or directing them to the appropriate resource. FAX results in accordance with Laboratory and Hospital policy. Communicate information and instructions regarding tests and specimen collection to clients (e.g. patients and/or family members, physicians, other healthcare providers) in a manner appropriate to and respectful of the population of the client even under adverse conditions. Communicate to next shift significant events/information and/or pending testing. May be required to learn and maintain competency to perform phlebotomy including phlebotomy performance, population-appropriate patient education on post-phlebotomy care, and any documentation required. Maintain phlebotomy supplies in working area. Submit orders, as needed, according to standard Laboratory policy and procedure. Maintain phlebotomy trays in neat orderly manner Ensure drawing station, patient bathroom, and waiting area (as applicable) are neat and clean. Independently take appropriate corrective action, as needed. Ensure adequacy of supplies in patient bathroom (e.g. containers, towels, toilet paper, cleansing wipes, etc.) replenishing stock as needed. Monitor equipment function and document information as required by Laboratory policy. Take corrective action as needed in consultation with the Supervisor and document it. Assist in training new phlebotomist or phlebotomy students on proper technique, policies, and procedures as directed by the PP&D Supervisor or designee. Attend and participate in department, hospital and committee meetings as appropriate. Participate in continuing education initiatives and seminars. Assist with local, state, federal, and regulatory agency compliance and preparedness activities. Perform job functions in a manner that promotes the safety and health of Milton Hospital co-workers, patients, and visitors in BID-Milton Hospital. Perform all duties in accordance with safety and other laws, rules, and regulations set forth by appropriate regulatory and government agencies and in accordance with established department and hospital policies and procedures. May be required to perform similar or related duties as may be necessary on an emergency basis or as designated by the department manager or supervisor. All job functions are subject to change at the discretion of the Hospital Administration. May be required to work off-shifts, weekends, holidays, overtime and on-call as is necessary to maintain laboratory services to the hospital. WORKING CONDITIONS The nature of the tasks/responsibilities required of employees in this position will likely expose them to blood and body fluids. Employees will be oriented to and required to understand and follow the standard precautions for infection control. A summary list of tasks and procedures that may cause exposure to blood and body fluids is listed in the attached Physical Abilities Job Description. Also identified is the protective equipment that is available. QUALIFICATIONS: MINIMUM EDUCATION: High School diploma or GED required MINIMUM EXPERIENCE: 1 year of applicable experience in a laboratory setting including phlebotomy and EKG experience. Degree or credits in clinical laboratory science preferred. LICENSES OR CERTIFICATION: Nationally recognized certification such as American Society for Clinical Laboratory Professionals (ASCP) or National Credentialing Agency for Laboratory Professional (NCA) equivalent preferred. OTHER SKILLS REQUIRED: Basic knowledge of Microsoft works, excel, Microsoft PowerPoint and computer skills. Must be organized and work to meet deadlines. Exercise independent judgement within boundaries of knowledge and skills. Excellent communication (verbal and written) and customer service (positive and professional) skills. Excellent analytical skills required, well-organized, detail-oriented, with the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment. Demonstrated ability to work effectively under pressure within a collaborative team oriented environment. Flexible to take on variety of tasks, adaptable and can anticipate opportunities for additional contributions. Requirement of high level of integrity and confidentiality. BID Milton will pay a $1,000 bonus (in two payments over six months) to hired candidates for this position. Candidates will receive $500 on the pay period following date of hire and another $500 once they reach six months of employment.
