Responsible for performing and reporting assigned laboratory tests in a prompt, efficient, and accurate manner in an assigned area of the laboratory. Under the direct supervision of the assistant supervisor, supervisor or coordinator responsible for the assigned shift as scheduled. Incumbents are subject to overtime and call back by the department as required by the hospital. Skill and proficiency in the technical field of medical technology is required. Such proficiency is usually acquired through completion of a medical technology program in an ASCP accredited school or the equivalent. Degree must meet ASCP/NCA requirements. .ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Performs and determines the accuracy of routine and special laboratory tests in designated sections of the laboratory. Evaluates and reports test results as instructed by test procedure or section procedure. Performs reagent and instrument quality control, interprets and records results, and reports problems to supervisory personnel as instructed in procedures and assists in resolving them. Performs and maintains records of preventive maintenance, and troubleshoots and takes appropriate steps to resolve malfunctions on assigned instruments. Assists in evaluating new instruments and in establishing maintenance protocols with approval of supervisor and pathologist. Assists in keeping current the sections of procedure and preventive maintenance manuals assigned by the supervisor. Inventories, recommends and submits orders, receives and stores supplies for assigned area. Instructs students and assists in orientation and evaluation of new personnel as assigned. Obtains specimens from patients for laboratory procedures. Contributes to the positive work climate and overall team effort of the department. Pour-over and transport hazardous flammable waste (alcohols, xylene, and stains) to the hazardous waste drum collection area on the lab dock as needed (RCRA Hazardous Waste Management for Generators Certification required). Performs related responsibilities as required or directed.

EDUCATION:
Skill and proficiency in the technical field of medical technology. Such proficiency is usually acquired through completion of a medical technology program in an ASCP accredited school or the equivalent. Degree must meet ASCP/NCA requirements.Professional/Technical continuing education (independent study) of not less than 12 CE hours annually (as required by State of Tennessee licensure).Continuing education in new laboratory procedures and tests.LICENSURE, REGISTRATION, CERTIFICATION:
MLT (ASCP) or equivalent. Tennessee licensure as Medical Technologist (General or Specific). Technologist (single discipline) by ASCP or NCA or equivalent.EXPERIENCE:
Two years full time experience. Knowledge of hospital and departmental policies and procedures normally acquired by 3 months to one year of on the job training and orientation.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
