Our two campuses in Methuen and Haverhill have a total of 320 beds, and we are a full-service, acute care hospital offering comprehensive inpatient medical/surgical units, outpatient care, and 24/7 emergency services. We have three behavioral health units: cardiac telemetry, and critical care service lines. Our Haverhill campus offers all private rooms, and our Methuen campus offers a new state-of-the-art catheterization suite and Joint Center of Excellence, named as a Blue Cross Blue Shield Blue Distinction+ Center for Knee and Hip Replacement.

Summary:

Recognized leadership and education position on a locked behavioral health unit. Under the direction of the Nurse Manager, plays a key role in the development and maintenance of education among the unit staff.  Emphasis is on the provision and supervision of direct care. Responsible for meeting established standards of nursing practice and regulatory requirements. Manages and oversees the care and services provided by ancillary and other professional personnel. Actively participates in the evaluation of staff.

 

Responsibilities:

Collaborates with multidisciplinary team to ensure optimal nursing operations.  Provides clinical consultation to nursing staff or directs them to other resources.  Manages the flow of patients to and from the department maintaining a focus on patient needs and efficiency. Supports and helps implement evidenced-based practice that remains current regarding standards of care established by the profession, regulatory & accreditation bodies and hospital policy and procedures.  Facilitates multidisciplinary care to ensure the best possible outcome for patients.  Delegates responsibilities to unit staff to ensure positive achievable patient outcomes.  Assist in candidate recruiting, training, performance evaluation, education, and corrective action activities. Fosters interdisciplinary, collaborative relationships within unit, department, and hospital wide. Acts a mentor for new staff. Participates in departmental performance improvement activities as well as patient/employee safety and satisfaction programs.  Assists in the active development and maintenance of education of the unit staff from orientation through annual competencies. Under the direction of the Nurse Manager, oversees and adjusts nursing schedules to ensure that the department is properly staffed based on census and acuity.  Evaluates patient care activities and recommends improvements.  Coordinate with Nurse Manager in the management of patient care units.  Provide supplementary care to patients as needed.  Participates in department administrator on-call schedule.  Conducts medical record audits to ensure compliance with regulatory standards of care.  Reports audit results to monthly Quality Committee as required. Other related duties as assigned Certification and/or demonstrated clinical competence in behavioral health nursing practice. Knowledge of the operations of an inpatient behavioral health unit. Knowledge of CMS, TJC, and Department of Mental Health regulations and standards. Demonstrated leadership capabilities including the ability to effectively communicate among all levels of organization and a genuine commitment to foster the growth and development of others. Ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively in a team environment. Readily adapts to change and welcomes new approaches when circumstances demand it. Ability to make timely and appropriate decisions in the face of conflicting demands and interests. Willingness to provide exceptional patient care. Ability to supervise staff.

Qualifications: 

 

Graduate of an accredited school of nursing. BSN Required MS preferred.  Current nursing registration in Massachusetts BCLS Required Three years of experience with behavioral health patients on a locked inpatient unit.  Charge Nurse and/or previous supervisory experience in a behavioral health environment preferred.
