Major Responsibilities:

With the Director, develops, implements and evaluates standards of nursing practice to assure quality care.

Maintains efficient and effective departmental operations

Ensures that work schedule is planned, implemented and monitored according to policy

Ensures the availability of necessary supplies and equipment

Facilitates smooth coordination of department services with other departments

Participates in case management activities to facilitate quality patient outcomes

Collaborates with Clinical Lead, Schedule Coordinator, Anesthesia and team members to identify and resolve issues that affect patients and the care team.

Serves as chief retention officer for unit/dept.

Fosters peer preceptor and mentoring relationships within staff.

Mentors staff in career and professional development.

Supports “new hires” through a structured orientation program. Coaches and provides feedback to orientees.

Articulates and understands clinical nursing practice issues and provides staff with necessary resources to deliver nursing care.

Involves RNs and other unit staff in unit governance and mentors leadership skills.

Encourages and role models reward and recognition programs.

Recognizes staff who perform exemplary customer service.

Implements flexible scheduling and staffing models.

Monitors and documents performance of staff and takes appropriate disciplinary measures when necessary.

Monitors unit retention, conducts exit interviews and acts on them.

Utilizes internal resources to plan, develop, implement, and evaluate orientation programs, inservice education, and professional growth and development programs for staff.

Maintains effective working relations with both internal and external customers

Assures that education relevant to patient/family needs are implemented.

Collaborates with physicians, nurses, and other health care professionals to assure delivery of quality care.

Actively participates in hospital committees and continuous quality improvement projects.

Collaborates with peers in the integration of clinical standards to meet patient and unit needs.

Coordinates with internal/external customers to facilitate patient satisfaction as well as cost effectiveness.

Manages, develops, implements, and evaluates standards of nursing to facilitate quality patient care, efficiency and cost effectiveness.

Provides strategic planning and direction for the implementation of unit goals and implements change to enhance effectiveness of patient care.

Continually monitors compliance with all regulatory agency standards, policies/procedures at the unit level.

Fosters an environment of clinical excellence.

Collaborates with the medical director and nursing staff to jointly plan patient care, develop education opportunities for staff and resolve interdisciplinary conflicts.

Establishes staffing requirements and plans for appropriate utilization of human resources.

Assesses acuity, caseload, and complexity of patients to determine staffing levels.

Assumes 24-hour accountability for assigned area of operation.

Annually reviews and approves all departmental standards of care, policies, procedures, and protocols.

Establishes in conjunction with the medical director and care coordinator criteria for monitoring of quality indicators in accordance with Lutheran General Hospital quality management program.

Develops and implements quality improvement processes in response to nurse sensitive, hospital, and system quality indicators, to improve patient care outcomes.

Prepares of departmental budgets (supplies, equipment, personnel). Responsible for budget management and performance and fiscal oversight of all areas of responsibility.

Prepares an annual budget and monitors budgetary expenditures. Reports, and implements a plan to address variances on an ongoing basis.

Develops major equipment purchase proposals.

Develops new and expanding program proposals with cost/budget implications.

Determines priority levels of capital and completes feasibility studies as needed in collaboration with the Director of Nursing and Finance.

Ensures that all departmental expenses are processed appropriately, timely, and according to Advocate’s financial control policy and corporate compliance guidelines.

Identifies inventory levels and costs of supplies maintained in the area.

Monitors utilization of staff, supplies, and equipment for optimal efficiency, and makes recommendations as appropriate.

Ensures charges are entered appropriately on a daily basis.

Appropriately manages budgeted vs. actual FTEs, open requisitions, profile processing, performance reviews, and salary adjustments within policy guidelines.

Responsible for personal and professional growth and development

Maintains unit and management competencies.

Keeps abreast of current standards of care via literature, educational offerings, etc.

Participates in activities to enhance professional growth by involvement in professional organizations and continuing education.

Maintains awareness of latest trends, technology, and methodology in health care and evaluates appropriateness for implementation.


Licensure:

Nurse, Registered (RN)


Education/Experience Required:

Bachelor’s degree required (BA, BS, BSN, etc.) 5 years of relevant clinical experience Demonstrated leadership
