Job Summary:

The Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) manages complex client health issues through direct care, expert consultation, research, education, and leadership. CNSs diagnose, treat, and directly manage patients’ health problems. CNSs provide expertise to support nurses caring for patients, drive practice changes within organizations, and ensure the use of evidence-based practice and care to achieve the best possible outcomes. The three spheres of influence for the Clinical Nurse Specialist are: Patient, Nursing/Nursing Practice, and Organization/System.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities:

Conducts direct care delivery and clinical practice observations of the nursing staff; provides guidance in nursing care, evaluates nursing practice, and provides informal education as needed. Identifies opportunities for improvement in patient care and proposes evidence-based solutions. Responds to requests for consultation and offers expert knowledge to nursing team and clinical nursing educators. Identifies family education needs in collaboration with the nursing team and provides teaching support as necessary. Evaluates current practice standards with the multidisciplinary leadership team to create educational plan(s) for department/area of responsibility. Develops tools to provide education and instruction. Administers education individually and in group settings. Conducts and supports nursing research to promote clinical knowledge development and research-based clinical practice. Evaluates current research findings, determines applicability in practice settings, and communicates changes in practice. Updates Nursing Leadership and Associates on new and innovative programs, processes, equipment, and supplies to improve patient care. Collaborates with other health care disciplines within the hospital and community to develop effective patient care programs. Reviews and updates policies to reflect current research and evidence-based practice. Conducts trials and evaluations for clinical equipment. Acts as clinical liaison to the shared governance councils. Performs other duties as assigned. 

Qualifications:

Master’s degree in Nursing (MSN) required. Must be an Advanced Practice Registered Nursing degree. Valid RN License from Virginia or reciprocal compact state required. Valid Clinical Nurse Specialist license by the Virginia State Board of Nursing required or eligible to sit for license required. Must obtain Clinical Nurse Specialist license within 6 months of hire. Professional specialty certification (VA State Board of Nursing approved) required or eligible to sit for certification required. Must obtain Professional specialty certification within 6 months of hire. AHA BLS Provider CPR required at hireAdvanced knowledge of nursing theory and practice within clinical specialty required. Minimum of five (5) years clinical nursing experience in specialty settings preferred.
