Clinical Operations Therapeutic Area Leader - Ophthalmology
The Position

 At Roche/Genentech Pharma Product Development Global Clinical Operations (PDG), we are determined to transform drug development and realize our Pharma Ambition to deliver 20 transformative medicines addressing diseases with the highest societal burden by 2029. We are looking for a  Clinical Operations Therapeutic Area Leader to lead and drive the delivery of our Ophthalmology Portfolio. This senior people leadership position holds significant accountability for clinical operations strategy and execution as well as enterprise collaboration.

The Opportunity:

The  Ophthalmology Clinical Operations  Therapeutic Area Leader in PDG at Roche/Genentech is responsible and accountable for the strategy and delivery of the PD portfolio of programs and studies in Ophthalmology. As the Ophthalmology Therapeutic Area Leader, you will: 

Develop and Refine Ophthalmology Portfolio Strategy
Accountable for creating and iterating the PD clinical operations strategy for Ophthalmology. Ensure alignment with the Clinical Development Plan (CDP) and the One Pharma Strategy to support efficient portfolio delivery.

Portfolio Oversight and Risk Management
Maintain active oversight of Ophthalmology portfolio assets and studies. Monitor portfolio status to anticipate risks and implement proactive triaging and mitigation strategies.

Strategic Stakeholder Alignment and Operational Leadership
Foster collaboration with PDG, APO, COEs, and other enterprise teams. Act as a key decision-maker on strategic operational decisions, balancing business needs and enabling delivery outside the PDG country footprint when necessary.

Drive Innovation and Operational Excellence
Utilize analytics and process optimization expertise to enhance efficiency, manage budgets, improve probability of technical success (PTS), and maintain a patient- and investigator-centered research approach. Embrace and implement innovative solutions to achieve strategic goals.

Representation and Influence Across Roche Enterprise
Act as the voice of PDG in the Ophthalmology Therapeutic Area. Build and sustain relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including patient advocacy groups, Therapeutic Area Experts (TAEs), health authorities, and vendors, to drive successful outcomes.

Collective Leadership and Team Alignment
Represent the Ophthalmology TA within the Portfolio Delivery Leadership Team. Model collective leadership behaviors and foster alignment between PDG and PD priorities to serve patients, investigative sites, and Roche’s mission.

People Leadership and Talent Development
Lead a matrixed organization of approximately 150 employees, including 10-12 direct reports. Build an inclusive, high-performing culture that emphasizes collaboration, talent development, and leadership growth while ensuring alignment with Roche’s values and DE&I commitments.

Team Engagement and Administrative Oversight
Inspire and motivate team members, conduct performance assessments, and provide coaching and feedback. Manage people-related administrative tasks (e.g., Workday updates) and address employment matters to support smooth team operations.

Who you are:

 15+ years pharmaceutical clinical Operations experience with at least 10 years being in global   clinical operations Strategy  Leadership. Additional commercial or relevant experience is considered an asset.  

Strong knowledge in the area of Ophthalmology, including external trends and issues in the global Ophthalmology landscape  and development and delivery 

Comprehensive understanding of global Pharma Clinical development in international settings 

Proven success in strategy development and execution using analytics, data-driven decision-making, and a track record of expanding access to underserved populations while meeting or exceeding ambitious goals.

Experience managing large, matrixed organizations, including leading direct reports and people leaders, recruiting and developing high-performing teams, and fostering collaboration and trust with stakeholders.

Fluency in English with additional language skills as an asset, and flexibility for frequent national or international travel based on business needs.

This position can be located at the Basel, Switzerland; South San Francisco, United States; Welwyn, England; or Mississauga, Canada HQ sites.  Expectation of ongoing and sustained campus presence at the site in compliance with local requirements.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of California is $227,600 - $422,600.  Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law.  A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance.  This position also qualifies for the benefits detailed at the link provided below.
