Key Position Details:

**Primary location is Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis. On occasion will need to travel to our Mercy (Coon Rapids) and United (St. Paul) sites.**

Job Description:

Facilitates and participates in the organization and execution of clinical research billing procedures for Allina Health Research. Responsible for interpreting clinical trial protocols and schedules of events, evaluating the feasibility of clinical trials, ensuring precise and comprehensive research charge review in the electronic medical record system (EPIC), aiding with data entry, and planning for existing and future workflow needs.

Principle Responsibilities

Implement Research Billing/Charge ReviewReview charges in Epic research work queues to route as standard-of-care or research-related servicesIndependently review and ensure charges are routed in compliance with the study billing grid and Epic charge documentation standards. If discrepancies are found, initiate a thorough investigation, gather relevant information, and collaborate with providers, research teams, billing, and finance departments to resolve the issues efficiently.Verify that all research charges and claims are accurately coded for billing purposes, adhering to the highest standards of coding accuracy and regulatory compliance.Recognize and prioritize high-dollar and aging accounts by leveraging experience in financial and billing operations; utilize advanced analytical skills to identify and address accounts requiring immediate attention, ensuring timely and accurate billing adjustments.Collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams to streamline processes, maximize revenue recovery, and maintain compliance with regulatory standards.Know, understand and follow federal and state regulations to ensure compliance standards are metRespond to questions regarding patients’ research study participation and the relationship to patient billing.Address research billing questions from research team members and other research clinical/operations staff.Drive and coordinate processes to secure maximum revenue from study fees through timely and accurate billing and collection.Escalate matters to Team Lead, Research Nurses or Manager as appropriate.Interpret Clinical Trial ProtocolsPerform detailed reviews of protocols, budgets, informed consent documents, sponsor contracts, and Notices of Grant Awards.Understand the clinical trial protocols and schedules of events, which serve as the blueprint study execution.Participate in site initiation visits to gain knowledge and training related to newly initiated research protocols.Stay informed about study protocol amendments.Support research teams through data integrity and data entryComplete research study builds in eProtocol.Assist with population of data into electronic data capture adhering to the protocol-specific data entry timelines.Review entered data for accuracy as needed.Review source documentation for accuracy and work with clinical staff to correct or clarify data as needed.Assist Research RNs and Coordinators with requests from auditors for medical records, lab data, and other source documents for review, as applicable.Complete queries and data clarification forms in a timely manner.Work with Research RN and Coordinators to complete Case Report Forms and Severe Adverse Event documentation used in reporting.Evaluating Clinical Trial FeasibilityPartner with Clinical Research Team(s) to conduct trial/study feasibility assessments.Engage with data teams to discover ways to meet patient population and enrollment goals.Collaborate with data teams to estimate patient availability and identify potential barriers to enrollment.Facilitate the collection of pricing & billing detail for study-related procedures.Coordinate and participate in meetings with the Office of Sponsored Projects (OSP) to review study budget, coverage analysis, and schedule of events.Other duties include:Complete quality improvement and productivity activities.Answer questions regarding team functions and assist with team direction.Assist in training team members as needed.Support co-workers and engage in positive interactions.Communicate professionally and timely.Other duties as assigned.


Required Qualifications

Bachelors degree in accounting, finance, healthcare administration, nursing, or related field2+ years related experience with healthcare and/or research billing, medical coding, or equivalent combination of experience and education


Preferred Qualifications

Experience with Epic’s Clinical Research Billing moduleExperience with a CTMS, preferably OnCore

Pay Range

Pay Range: $25.50 to $34.94 per hour

The pay described reflects the base hiring pay range. Your starting rate would depend on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, your experience, education, and the union agreement (if applicable). Shift, weekend and/or other differentials may be available to increase your pay rate for certain shifts or work.
