The Clinical Shift Manager of the ER will consistently practice excellent nursing skills and professionalism. He/She will assist the director with the coordination of the unit functions, demonstrate adequate leadership skills, and be proficient in patient assessment, care planning, implementation and evaluation of care provided. The planning and coordination includes meeting and exceeding compliance with core measures contributes to reduction in LOS, active participation with all aspects of quality, safety and performance improvement activities, collaboration with all the members of the multidisciplinary team in providing outstanding customer service to patients, family members, physicians and the public. Meets and exceeds the Department of Health Service (DHS). The Joint Commission (TJC) and other regulatory requirement. The Clinical Manager role consistently demonstrates exemplary customer service to all entities including physician’s staff, patients and families. The Clinical Shift Manager mentors employees and strives for self-improvement. The role is active in performance improvement as it applies to the department and organization. He/She coordinates staffing employee evaluations and discipline in conjunction with the unit director.

Responsibilities

Assists the director in development, implementation, and evaluation of ongoing service programs that ensure quality nursing, and patient care programs, consistent with the hospital mission.

 

Assists the department director with meeting regulatory compliance

 

Assists director with unit CQI program, which monitors and evaluates critical aspects of care

 

Maintains current license and knowledge of nursing care requirements for all patients on the unit. Assesses the need for personal growth and development and takes the initiative in seeking opportunities to meet this need.

 

Accurately identifies real/potential problems affecting the service and implements solutions with follow-through and communication.

 

Fosters a service, which is consistent with the patient care beliefs and shared management philosophy of the department.

 

Consults with patients/families through primary nurse request, direct family request or direct assessment of patient/family response to hospitalization. Assesses patient/significant other survey responses regarding nursing care and services.

 

Responsible for ongoing development of staff and unit-specific patient care programs.

 

Responsible for effective communication horizontally and vertically within the organization.

 

Responsible for effective and efficient fiscal management of department operations to ensure proper utilization of organizational and financial resources.

Is supportive of the department’s operational excellence; works with director to ensure that the department delivers quality services in accordance with applicable policies, procedures and professional standards.

 

Assists the department director to ensure quality services and promote positive employee relations.

 

Is responsible for the fiscal management of department and ensures proper utilization of the organization’s financial resources.

 

Effectively communicates departmental, organizational, and industrial information to staff.

 

Attains all agreed to goals and objectives within specified time frames, as part of the organization’s overall mission.

 

Attends all required safety training programs and can describe his or her responsibilities related to general safety, department/service safety, and specific job-related hazards.

 

Follows the hospital exposure control plans/bloodborne and airborne pathogens.

 

Demonstrates respect and regard for the dignity of all patients, families, visitors, and fellow employees to ensure a professional, responsible, and courteous environment.

 

Promotes effective working relations and works effectively as part of a department/unit team inter- and intradepartmentally to facilitate the department’s/unit’s ability to meet its goals and objectives.

 

Utilizes appropriate resources within the institution to provide consultation, education, technical, or informational services as needed for self, staff, and patients.

 

Responsible for effective human resources (HR) management to achieve and maintain quality services and positive employee relations.

 

Promotes a positive image of professional nursing and serves as a role model to staff.

 

 

Qualifications

Minimum Education

Graduate of an accredited school of nursing, Associates in Nursing Required.

Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred

 

Minimum Work Experience

One year experience in ER department required.

Five years acute care experience preferred.

Supervisory or Charge experience preferred.

 

Required Licenses/Certifications:

Current California RN state license

BLS, ACLS, PALS certification

MAB certification / AB508 certification within 30 days of hire

 

Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

Demonstrated clinical competence in relevant area of nursing practice.

Demonstrated leadership ability and potential managerial competency. Evidence of this includes, but is not limited to, effective communication skills and abilities to deal well with people, ability to problem solve, confront/resolve issues, motivate others, ability to plan, and organize and direct the activities of others.
