Job Description Summary:

PayPal's Cloud FinOps team is looking for a dynamic and energetic individual with a data engineering and database operations background to help enhance and operationalize the analytics solution that helps executives with understanding the cost, quality, and value of the cloud services used by infrastructure teams. The Cloud FinOps team is part of the overall Cloud Management Office (CMO) within the Technology Infrastructure org.

The CMO sets standards for all PayPal engineering teams when using public/private cloud services to ensure both the best cost effectiveness and adherence to PayPal infrastructure standards. The FinOps team’s overall objective is to help PayPal build a more scalable, optimized infrastructure to run SITE by identifying areas of improvement and supporting engineering teams understand their spend, ways to optimize those costs, and analytics as they try to implement those improvements.

The data engineer role would work as part of data management team to maintain an existing data mart, ETL pipelines, build integrations and write data aggregation jobs that are used by the FinOps data analysts for cost and optimization analysis.

Job Description:

In your day-to-day activities you will

Work with the DB Lead to create and maintain optimal data pipeline architectureAssemble large, complex data sets that meet functional / non-functional business requirementsBuild the ETL jobs required for optimal extraction, transformation, and loading of data from a wide variety of data sources using SQL and Google ‘big data’ technologiesBuild APIs that expose the data so customers can consume and integrate with our dataEvaluate large and complex queries / stored procedures and recommend changes to optimize performanceAssist with the expansion into public cloud cost transparencyLead automation efforts leveraging inner source interaction models with other teamsAssist data analysts on our team with query development, statistical analysis, and data visualization as neededMaintain technical documentation on stored procedures and ETL logic used to manage the database and data ingestion pipeline

Minimum Requirements

BS in computer science, Information systems or equivalent field, MS preferred4-5 years working experience as a Data EngineerExperience building and optimizing ETLs, data pipelines, architectures, and data aggregatesProficient in Microsoft SQL Server 2016 & 2019 Database Development (T-SQL), Data Analysis and Support.Thorough understanding of RDBMS concepts and ability to write complex SQL queries, Stored procedures, Functions & triggersProficiency with Java and Python languagesBasic experience with database administration (managing access, scheduled jobs, etc.)Basic experience with Google cloud compute servicesBasic experience with Google Big QueryUnderstand REST API development and designVery strong foundational knowledge in Object-Oriented Design Principles, Data Structures, Algorithms, and Software EngineeringCI/CD pipeline experienceExperience with code repositories like Git/GitHubDemonstrated experience working with large data sets and a love for working with dataExperience writing and maintaining technical documentationBasic familiarity with MS Office knowledge (Excel, PowerPoint, Word)Strong communication skills and a constant desire to grow, learn, and explore new things
