The Counseling and Mental Health Center (CMHC) provides a full range of university mental health services including time-limited individual therapy, group therapy, program development and outreach, psychiatric assessment and treatment, integrated healthcare, urgent care, case management services.  Training and supervision are provided to psychology and social work interns, psychiatric residents, and psychology practicum students.  The center's large, multidisciplinary staff includes psychologists, social workers, psychiatrists, and licensed professional counselors.

Purpose

Provides psychiatric assessments and treatment for undergraduate and graduate students presenting to the UT Counseling and Mental Health Center (CMHC), with a focus on the delivery of quality psychiatric care based on current standards of practice.

Responsibilities

Conducts psychiatric assessments and diagnostic evaluations of students. 

Determines and administers psychiatric treatment.

Prescribes and monitors medications and any changes in treatment in the follow-up care of students, as needed.

Reviews students records to determine the progress, effectiveness, and appropriateness of treatment services provided. 

Updates and maintains students' medical records. 

Maintains current, accurate and timely clinical documentation in accordance with state and federal law, medical ethics and CMHC policies. 

Works collaboratively and cooperatively with other mental health professionals on CMHCs multidisciplinary staff.

Consults with physicians and mid-level practitioners of University Health Services.

Responds to consultation requests and referrals from UT students, faculty and staff, as well as off-campus community health providers.

Provides emergency management and crisis intervention services to students in collaboration with the CMHC Crisis teams.

Facilitates voluntary and involuntary hospitalizations.

Provides after hours availability in conjunction with the other CMHC psychiatrists.

Liaisons with community health providers, services, hospitals and other resources, as related to the psychiatric care of the student.

Participates in the training and supervision of psychiatric residents and fellows, psychiatric nurse practitioner students, psychiatric pharmacy residents and other trainees, such as psychology and social work interns and practicum students.

Attends and participates in departmental and divisional meetings, as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited college of medicine with a doctoral degree in medicine (MD or DO). 

Completion of an accredited ACGME psychiatric residency program.

Board certified in Psychiatry from the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology or board eligible with the expectation of securing board certification within one year of hire.

Experience in direct outpatient psychiatric care.

Experience in working with college-aged patients.

Experience in working in a multidisciplinary setting.

Knowledgeable about the use of current assessment procedures, treatment methods, interventions and medications.

Thrives in an environment which employs a multidisciplinary team approach and features a collaborative work environment.

Possesses a strong orientation toward service to students.

Demonstrates excellent communication and interpersonal skills, is approachable, available and helpful to multidisciplinary staff and collaborates effectively in a team setting.

Proficiency in the use of an electronic medical record.

Holds a current full unrestricted Texas Medical license.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

At least 3 years of clinical experience in direct outpatient care following board certification.

Clinical experience including management of severe psychiatric illness in a hospital (inpatient/emergency services), partial hospital/intensive outpatient or mental health agency setting.

Experience providing outpatient psychiatric care in a university/college setting.

Holds current medical license(s) in (a) state(s) other than Texas.

Experience with training of psychiatric residents or other trainees.

Experience and interest in working with a diverse population.

Salary Range

$200,000 + depending on qualifications

Employment Eligibility:

Retirement Plan Eligibility:

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
