CNC Machine Operator

Sets up and operate machine tools, such as lathes, milling machines, boring machines, and grinders to machine metal work pieces according to specifications, tooling instructions and standard charts applying knowledge of machining methods.  Set up and operate conventional or CNC equipment and offsets. Lay out metal stock or work pieces such as plates, angles, etc. to indicated location, dimension and tolerance necessary for further processing. Also analyze specifications and computes dimensions according to knowledge of product, subsequent processing, shop mathematics and layout procedures.  Process work orders and determine when to change out consumables.  Perform operations on work pieces using assigned machine(s).

Essential Functions of the Job:

Read blueprints, study drawings, sketches, or job orders for product specifications such as dimensions and tolerances and tooling instructions such as fixtures, feed rates, cutting speeds, depth of cut, and determines sequence of operations, and plans layouts. Select, positions and secures tool in tool holder (chuck, collet, tool post, etc.). Positions and secures work pieces in holding device, machine table, chuck, centers or fixtures, using clamps or wrenches. Operate controls to position tool and work piece in relation to each other and sets specified feeds, speeds and depth of cut; examines work pieces and verifies such requirements as dimensions and proper square measurements, using rule, square and straight edge. Set up fixture or feeding device, starts machine and turns hand wheel to feed tool or work piece or vice versa, and engages feed. Observe operation of machine and verifies conformance of machine work piece to specifications using measuring instruments. Multi-machining, editing and simple programming required in some areas (CNC machines). Some machine maintenance is required. Train other employees in the set-up and operation of machines. Lift and positions work pieces in the machine manually or with a hoist. Verify position with measuring instruments and determines reference points and computer layout dimension. Complete all necessary documentation accurately. Understand machines and tooling. Monitors tool condition writes up maintenance request for timely repairs on general tool maintenance. May be required to perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSA’s):

Ability to interpret blueprints, drawings, and measurements to plan and set up layouts. Ability to use fixed gauges, calipers and micrometers. Strong shop math skills: practical application of fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions. Knowledge and ability to set and program various machine shop machines. Troubleshooting skills; assess machined parts, structures and components to identify errors. Ability to read safety rules; instructions in the use of maintenance of shop tools and equipment; methods and procedures in mechanical drawings and layout work. Ability to work safely and follow all safety guidelines.

Education and Experience:

High school diploma or GED preferred. Three years of experience in operation of shop machines.

Working Conditions:

Must be able to lift, push or pull up to 35 pounds alone and greater than 35 pounds with assistance. Must be able to stand for extended periods of time (up to 8+ hours) as required by tasks being completed. Ability to wear appropriate PPE, including hearing/eye protection, gloves and safety shoes. Must be able to work overtime as needed to complete job assignments. Ability to work in a non-climate-controlled manufacturing plant environment. Frequent walking, bending, stooping, reaching and climbing as required by tasks being completed.
