Here’s What You Need
Education
H.S. Diploma or Equivalent REQUIRED and
Other Completion of a hospital coding course/program from a nationally recognized organization (e.g. AHIMA, AAPC or ACDIS) OR completion of Texas Health Resource's Clinical Coding Apprenticeship Program REQUIRED or
Associate's Degree Health Information Technology REQUIRED or
Bachelor's Degree Health Information Administration REQUIRED
Experience
1 Year Inpatient coding experience in acute care hospital setting REQUIRED
Licenses and Certifications
CCA - Certified Coding Associate Upon Hire REQUIRED or
COC - Certified Outpatient Coder Upon Hire REQUIRED or
RHIT - Registered Health Information Technician Upon Hire REQUIRED or
CPC - Certified Professional Coder Upon Hire REQUIRED or
RHIA - Registered Health Information Administrator Upon Hire REQUIRED or
CCS - Certified Coding Specialist Upon Hire REQUIRED or
CCS-P - Certified Coding Specialist - Physician-based Upon Hire REQUIRED or
Other CMC, CIC, CCDS, CDIP Upon Hire REQUIRED or
Skills
Effective oral and written communication skills. Ability to apply definition of principal diagnosis to arrive at correct code assignment. Accurately distinguishes between symptoms and a true diagnosis. Applies knowledge of ICD 10-CM and PCS Procedure Guidelines. Able to read and interpret health record documentation relevant to coding, typically provided by a single provider. Keeps abreast of new developments in coding. Basic knowledge of automated encoding system and computer assisted coding methods. General knowledge of EHRs (electronic health record systems). Demonstrated ability to utilize decision tree logic to arrive at coding assignment.
Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office tools such as Outlook and Word
What You Will Do
· Reviews and interprets health record documentation to identify pertinent diagnosis/procedures that require code assignment for inpatient records.
· Demonstrates appropriate utilization of coding software: computer-assisted coding (CAC), electronic health record (EHR) and online coding reference material and/or other utilized technology.
· Assigns/sequences ICD-10-CM and PCS codes to selected medical records per Coding Guidelines, THR Coding Compliance Policies, CMS and other third party payers.
· Ability to identify the need for and to write accurate queries to providers to ensure appropriate documentation for accurate coding.
· Maintains adequate quality and production.
· Abstracts pertinent information from patient medical records.
· Correctly identifies and abstracts all physicians and disposition codes.
· Ability to communicate with and discuss DRG variances with Clinical Documentation Integrity (CDI)
· Maintains coding proficiency by keeping up-to-date on coding guidelines as published in Coding Clinic.
· Completes all required training and education including any continuing education units (CEUs) as required for any credentials/certifications held and/or THR coding compliance requirements.
