POSITION SUMMARY:
The Martinez Cogen facility is seeking an Operator to fill the Power Plant Technician role.
100 MW combined cycle cogeneration power plant supplies power and steam to the associated renewable fuels facility. The plant utilizes two GE Frame 6B gas turbines that feed exhaust gas to Foster Wheeler waste heat boilers to produce 900# steam for use in a GE industrial extraction steam turbine.
Cogen is a 24/7 operation. Each crew works 12 hours per day on 4 days on 4 days off work schedule. Non-exempt position, member of the IBEW #1245 Union with compensation and benefits as per the collective bargaining agreement (CBA) between the union and the company.
The Power Plant Technician (PPT), “Outside Operator” primarily operates the gas and steam turbines along with the associated auxiliary plant equipment from the direction of the Foreman.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Power Plant Technician operates installed equipment including turbo generators, cooling tower, heat recovery units, water treatment, and auxiliary equipment such as air compressors, motors, valves, and pumps at the direction of the Lead Operator.Completes unit inspection rounds of plant equipment several times per shift, reads/records meters and gauges or automatic recording devices at specified intervals to verify operating conditions. Also investigates and corrects unusual conditions such as noise, odors, leaks, hot or vibrating equipment, etc.Records daily shift activities in the operator’s electronic logbook.Visually inspects equipment to detect malfunctions or need for repair, adjustment, or lubrication.Maintains equipment by performing preventative maintenance (PM) tasks as assigned including changing pump oil and lubricating equipment as appropriate.Takes samples and performs specified tests of plant process and cooling water. Adjust process water properties with chemical additives and/ or adjust chemical injection pumps rates.Plans, prepares, and facilitates the safe turnover of equipment for maintenance. Prepares work packages and work permits ahead of scheduled maintenance. Completes job walks with mechanical crews to ensure task alignment and safety. Additionally, review all completed maintenance jobs to ensure the work is complete and the job site clean, prior to signing off work orders.Assure that the facility maintains good housekeeping appearances and practices.Responsible for monitoring the status of all plant systems, controlling routine plant operations, responding to alarms and abnormal conditions by taking appropriate corrective actions, and basic maintenance duties.Executes plant shutdown and start-up procedures as required and assures that the plant meets its generating requirements while operating in a safe and efficient manner.Conducts these tasks in accordance with Plant Operating and Maintenance procedures and associated vendor and manufacturer technical procedures.PPT has the authority to control the operation of the plant equipment and must do so in a safe and efficient manner and always remain in compliance with all environmental permits and all safety regulations. This position must effectively communicate information to supervisory and fellow plant personnel relative to the condition of the plant equipment and performance and provide suggestions for plant improvement.Routinely trains on the off shifts for compliance, qualification, emergency, and enhancement training. Helps develop and maintain operating procedures.Maintains thorough, concise, and complete unit logs of all significant operation changes, priority status, and problems. This information is thoroughly reviewed with relieving operator at shift change to ensure the new shift fully understands the status of the units.Responds immediately to all unit emergencies. Ensures safety of all personnel in the area, isolates, and mitigates high-risk areas and immediately activates unit emergency equipment.Forecast, inventory, and reorder spare parts to maintain plant reliability. Assist in physical inventories.Participate in the administrative maintenance of the plant operating manuals, technical references, prints and diagrams and preventative/predictive maintenance records. Maintain complete equipment files, logs, drawings, and schematics for all designated equipment.Maintain assigned working locations in a neat and orderly condition. Complete other tasks as requested by the Plant Management, as applicable.SKILLS:
Must be comfortable working in confined spaces and high elevations.Must be able to perform work in a team environment, demonstrating honesty and integrity.Must be organized and possess ability to keep accurate legible documentation.Requires safe work practices to ensure safety is a fundamental part of every task. Follow all safety procedures and maintain good housekeeping practices.Requires ability to respond to Cogen unit needs outside of normally scheduled work hours and take ownership of all work performed.Requires demonstrated mechanical and troubleshooting abilities.Must possess good oral and written communication, and ability to make sound decisions.EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/REQUIREMENTS:
High school diploma or equivalent is required.Valid driver’s license required.Minimum 5 years’ process operations experience in refining, chemical, or petrochemical industry required.Required to successfully complete operator qualification training and participate in random drug and alcohol screenings.Required to clear drug test and physical to be able to work in all areas of the Cogen and perform all job requirements.Required to work in adverse conditions, (high heat, high noise, confined space, lifting 50lbs, climbing ladders and stairs, working in high places, etc.)Protective equipment such as hard hats, safety glasses, and ear protection and other equipment must be worn in the performance of some duties. Work with hazardous materials may be required.This position requires working in rotating shifts with the possibility of weekend and holiday work as required by schedules, workload, and plant conditions.” Stand By” status will be routinely required. Will also be required to work overtime.Trade school, related military service training programs, or technical training school programs. Additional professional training preferred.2 or more years' experience as control room/lead operator preferred.2 or more years' experience in power generation strongly preferred.PAY AND BENEFITS:
This role has a starting rate of $45.78 and the maximum rate for the position is $54.73 with demonstrated qualification/proficiency after being hired.
