PRIMARY PURPOSE
Performs basic administrative and/or limited patient care activities under the direction of a Parkland professional and is committed to the provision of patient centered/ patient valued care. Works in designated area with the goal of learning a particular job so employee is qualified to apply for the job once the internship is complete.
Primary/permanent residence preferred in Dallas County, regardless of where the student attends college.
MINIMUM SPECIFICATIONS
Education
- Must have completed a minimum of 30 semester hours of college course work post high school graduation, or
- Must be actively enrolled in an accredited graduate degree program.
- Must have a minimum 3.0 GPA
- Applicants must be interested in pursuing a career in healthcare or healthcare administration.
- Must remain enrolled with an active student status for the duration of the program.
- Must be able to fulfill an 8-week commitment.
Experience
- None.
Equivalent Education and/or Experience
- May have an equivalent combination of education and/or experience in lieu of specific education and/or experience as stated above.
Certification/Registration/Licensure
- May be required to have a current Heartsaver or Healthcare Provider CPR course completion card, or successfully complete a course upon initial orientation from one of the following:
- American Heart Association
- American Red Cross
- Military Training Network.
Skills or Special Abilities
- Must be able to demonstrate skill in the use of supplies and assigned equipment.
- Must be able to demonstrate basic patient care skills.
- Must be able to communicate effectively with personnel of other departments, nurses, physicians, patients and families.
- Must be able to demonstrate patient centered/ patient valued behaviors.
Additional Work Requirements:
- Students will be required to participate in all educational programs, community and social activities related to the Collegiate Fellows Program. These activities may be in addition to the regular working hours.
- Work area will be limited to the department assigned. Students will not be allowed to work as paid staff or as a volunteer in any other area of the hospital during their tenure in the Collegiate Fellows program.
Responsibilities
1. Assists with researching, developing, implementing, and administering projects for the assigned work area.
2. Assists with data entry/analysis as assigned.
3. Assists other staff members with their professional duties, in order to optimize business operations.
4. Performs limited, specified patient care activities, under the direction of a Registered Nurse (Unit Manager), including providing basic hygiene care, taking vital signs, and range of motion exercises. May also provide basic services such as EKG. May escort patients to other areas, clean designated or special areas, provide or request translation services when applicable, perform quality control checks, and deliver patient specimens when applicable in order to provide optimal patient care.
5. Make appropriate notations and records activities performed, such as vital signs, ambulation, feeding outcomes, etc. in accordance with standards established by the nursing unit.
6. Serves as a patient advocate by responding to a patient's needs and special requests. Maintains open communication, and honors patient's rights and confidentiality, while providing optimal service to patients and their families.
7. Monitors ongoing patient status and responds to a patient's change in condition by notifying and assisting nurses and other health team members in handling patient care needs.
8. Utilizes communication skills by answering the intercom and telephone appropriately.
Job Accountabilities
1. Identifies ways to improve work processes and improve customer satisfaction. Makes recommendations to supervisor, implements, and monitors results as appropriate in support of the overall goals of the department and Parkland.
2. Stays abreast of the latest developments, advancements, and trends in the field by attending seminars/workshops, reading professional journals, actively participating in professional organizations, and/or maintaining certification or licensure. Integrates knowledge gained into current work practices.
3. Maintains knowledge of applicable rules, regulations, policies, laws and guidelines that impact the area. Develops effective internal controls designed to promote adherence with applicable laws, accreditation agency requirements, and federal, state, and private health plans. Seeks advice and guidance as needed to ensure proper understanding.
