Job Description

The Commercial Underwriter I actively participates on a team of underwriters with the responsibility of assessing risk and determining if the case is a good a match for the company.



This is a fully remote role, and the ideal candidate will be located in the EST time zone.



Qualified candidates will have prior experience in commercial lines underwriting. To be successful in this role, candidates should have strong decision making and analytical skills in risk assessment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Perform risk reviews and upfront underwriting reviews to determine risk acceptability (new business, renewals, endorsements, and reinstatements)Make decisions on risk acceptabilityServe as point of contact for Customer Service and Backoffice teamsImplements agreed upon underwriting procedures to achieve growth and profit objectivesInvolvement with underwriting of new business and renewals, including providing some input into product decisions and proceduresImplement procedures and guidelines for Commercial Vehicle and make recommendations to Underwriting Manager for changes that will enhance our current book of business and automation of the Commercial Auto productDevelop and analyze both internal and external data for assigned business segment(s) and line(s) of business in order to direct pricing, underwriting, and sales decisionsAnalyze the quality of assigned books of business through agent and profile reviews, audits, and ongoing communication with Product Managers and SalesHelp to determine actions needed for agent rehabilitationServe as a contact for Commercial Vehicle agentsDevelop knowledge of state and laws and regulations applicable to the underwriting of commercial vehicles and act a subject matter expert for both agents and customer service  

Minimum Skills and Competencies:

Bachelor’s Degree or in-lieu of degree equivalent education, training and work-related experience6+ months of commercial underwriting experienceAbility to establish and maintain agency relationships, identify profitable opportunities, and able to assist in leveraging business opportunities for other divisionsProfessional phone etiquette and interpersonal skillsEffective leadership and diplomacy skillsProficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)Must possess effective verbal and written communication skillsNegotiation and sales skillsStrong attention to detail, organizational skills, and timeliness in order to meet customer service expectationsAbility to work in a fast-paced environment meeting aggressive business deadlinesAbility and desire to learn and effectively use computer based underwriting systems to manage workflow

Desired Skills:

Bachelor’s Degree in a Business related field1+ years insurance underwriting experience in Commercial linesWillingness to pursue Insurance professional designations such as IIC, CPCU, AU, and/or ARMThorough knowledge of the Policy Processing systems.Ability to effectively prioritizeMulti-tasking abilitiesIn-depth business knowledgeEffective problem solving skillsAbility to cultivate cross-functional relationships

Compensation

Compensation offered for this role is $50,400.00 - 76,125.00 annually and is based on experience and qualifications.
