Communication Technician 1

The Communications Technician is responsible for the planning, layout and complete installation of new and retrofit communications equipment and systems in accordance with all applicable plans, specifications, codes and industry standards for a particular project. This includes conducting site surveys, pulling cable, terminating and testing both copper and fiber optic cable to the highest level of specifications as well as installing ancillary communications systems.

The candidate must have extensive experience with the installation, termination and testing of Structured Cable Plant in commercial environments. Hospital or Airport installs will be a plus. The candidate should have knowledge of BICSI guidelines for proper install and termination procedures. Employees must provide their own hand tools. This position requires that you be able to train and supervise apprentices in a team environment while facilitating the installation of cabling and electronics. A focus on safety, quality, production and schedule is fundamental to all work performed. Employees are expected to be committed to excellence and generate a high quality of work. All employees are expected to consistently report to work on time, work well with other employees to accomplish a common goal, and maintain a safe work environment. M.C. Dean will provide hard hat, safety glasses, gloves and safety vest which must be worn at all time while on the job site. Employee is required to provide and wear long pants, a shirt with at least a 4" sleeve and safety toed boots.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

Installation of Category rated copper and fiber optic cable.

Terminating and testing of horizontal copper cabling

Terminating fiber optic cable via anaerobic, mechanical and fusion splicing.

Termination and splicing of copper riser cable.

Installation of panels, enclosures and electronics.

Labeling of communications systems including cable, panels, and electronics.

Installation of interior conduit and surface mount raceway systems.

Read and understand plans and specifications.

Installation of plywood, racks and cabinets.

Installation of cable trays within communications rooms

Mentor apprentices.

Assist in OSP (outside plant) installations.

Pulling cable 100 pair or smaller unassisted.

Installing prefab assembly unassisted.

Participating in job site cleanup.

Maintaining clean work area.

Installing ENT conduit, surface mount raceways, wall and floor sleeves.

Installing pull and junction boxes up to 24" x 24".

Troubleshoot and fix communications cable issues.

Experience:

3 years prior experience in commercial communications industry.

Must have a valid driver's license to be able to operate equipment (for which you will be trained).

High School diploma or GED.

Candidates must be willing to work in different countries for up to 6 months out of the year and travel within the United States, as well.

Prior experience in communications work including room build-out, Cat6, Cat6A and fiber optic termination, interpret and maintain drawing and as-builts. Test, troubleshoot, and repair copper and fiber optic cabling.

​​​​​​​PHYSICAL ABILITIES:

Lifts at least 100 pounds at one time and 60 pounds for an extended period of time.

Relocates a 12 foot stepladder without assistance.

Works at various heights up to 60 feet and can climb and maintain balance on scaffolds, aerial lifts, catwalks and all types of ladders.

Walks, climbs, lifts, squats, crawls, kneels, pushes, pulls and reaches overhead on a routine and repetitive basis.

Possess good vision (may be corrected vision), the ability to see in color, and the ability to hear and communicate in English.

May use a standard ladder without exceeding the weight limit while carrying tools.

Tell when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong.  It does not involve solving the problem, only recognizing there is a problem.

Apply general rules to specific problems to produce answers that make sense.

Combine pieces of information to form general rules or conclusions (including finding a relationship among seemingly unrelated events).

Listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences.

Familiarity with:

BlueBeam Fluke Versiv MS Office Word and Excel
