Job Title: Communications and Public Relations Manager

FLSA Status: Full Time - exempt
Reports to: Director of Communications and Marketing 

Schedule: Monday-Friday
Supervises: N/A 

Rate of Pay: $75,000 to $85,000 annually

Function: Under the direction of the Communications & Marketing Director, the Communications & Public Relations Manager is responsible for supporting the Communications & Marketing team with the development and implementation of communications and public relations critical to the success of the Intermountain Division.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

 Communications & Public Relations

Assist with the writing, editing and proofing of communications materials, including news releases, newsletters and website stories, the annual report, marketing materials, talking points and more. Excellent writing and proofreading skills are required. Research, report and write compelling human-interest and program-related stories from throughout the Intermountain Division for various TSA channels, including social media, printed materials and the website(s). Assist in developing and implementing marketing messaging, including for email, radio and TV. Identify and use a proper and consistent voice and tone. As part of an overall team strategy, work with the Communications & Marketing Director to develop and deploy story pitches to local and regional media. Support the Communications & Marketing Director’s outreach efforts with media outlets, including television, radio, digital and print, helping to develop story pitches. In partnership with the Communications & Marketing Director, develop and implement internal and external communications to increase TSA awareness while ensuring consistent messaging. Assist with copy editing and proofing of Direct Mail materials and other marketing assets as needed. Build relationships with Corps and Service Extension Center staff throughout the Intermountain Division to learn about the people and programs in their respective areas. Prepare officers and staff for interviews with media; coordinate media opportunities as needed. Organize and manage press conferences, industry events, and other public appearances to promote TSA and its message.  Track media coverage, social media metrics, and public sentiment to measure campaign effectiveness and identify areas for improvement.  Assist with crisis and issues communications management as needed. As a critical member of the Marketing & Communications team, support the Intermountain Division during disaster situations. This may include gathering and sharing news, photos, and statistics from the scene of a disaster and responding to media requests.

 

Digital Content

Working with the Marketing Manager, create and deploy a consistent and robust social media presence for the Intermountain Division. Additionally, working with the Marketing Manager, create and deploy social media content for local Corps and Service Extension Centers throughout the Intermountain Division. Write, edit and design electronic communications, including a monthly staff e-newsletter, and other electronic communications as assigned. Keep a watchful eye on the Intermountain Division’s social media across multiple platforms and address public comments in a pre-determined and professional manner.

 

Website Support

Ability to work quickly in securing, evaluating, posting, and proofing content. Ability to make simple updates to website pages in a timely manner.

Qualification and Education Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in communications or similar field with five years or more of public relations communications required. Journalism or fundraising experience is a plus. Experience in public relations at a non-profit or marketing agency. Strategic thinking and an ability to develop comprehensive communication plans. Be supportive of The Salvation Army’s mission. Crisis management skills and experience.  Excellent speaking, writing, editing and proofing skills. Media monitoring and analysis skills. An understanding of digital media and social media platforms. Ability to prioritize, organize and manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines. Ability to build and maintain relationships with members of local and regional media throughout the Intermountain Division. Engagement in professional development to further knowledge and value to the organization. High level of integrity and the ability to maintain confidentiality. Self-motivated in the ability to create, improve and strategically implement effective communications solutions. Ability to find new opportunities to market exceptional services offered to the community by The Salvation Army. Creative problem-solving skills. Ability to work as part of a team. Must be able to work with minimal supervision and be prepared to manage a wide variety of assignments. Must be minimally 21 years of age and possessing a valid in-state Driver's License
