THIS IS A TEMPORARY POSITION
The New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) is committed to increasing opportunities for low- and moderate-income New Yorkers by providing safe, affordable housing and facilitating access to social and community services. NYCHA’s Department of Resident Economic Empowerment & Sustainability (REES) is charged with working to develop and implement programs, policies and collaborations to measurably support residents increased economic opportunities with a focus on asset building, employment, advancement, adult education and training, and business development.
NYCHA was awarded a $3.7 million grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to bring a Jobs Plus Program to Coney Island, Brooklyn. The HUD Jobs Plus Program is a comprehensive, placed- based employment model that offers services to all work-able residents in designated public housing developments or clusters of developments and serve as a platform to help residents build their skills and connect to the labor market so they can increase their incomes. Services are located on or close to the targeted developments and offer a range of services designed to support work including employer linkages, job placement and counseling, educational advancement, financial counseling and rent incentive, and community building. The NYCHA Coney Island Jobs Plus program will serve residents living in the Surfside Gardens, Coney Island 1 and Coney Island 1 (Site 4&5) developments in the Brooklyn.
NYCHA REES is seeking three (3) part-time (25 hrs. per week) Community Coaches for its Coney Island Jobs Plus Program. The Community Coaches will be a vital part of the Coney Island Jobs Plus team and through outreach and other activities will inform Surfside Gardens, Coney Island Houses 1, and Coney Island Houses 1 (Site 4&5) residents about Coney Island Jobs Plus, and motivate them to become members to take advantage of available Jobs Plus services and resources, including economic, educational, job training, social services, and community resources. The Community Coaches will also help plan events that will increase residents’ exposure to economic opportunities.
Candidates must be NYCHA resident residing in Surfside Gardens, Coney Island Houses 1, or Coney Island Houses 1 (Site 4&5) developments in Brooklyn; must have excellent communication skills, be well-respected and have a working knowledge of the local community; must be resourceful, committed to improving their community, and willing to build on their existing relationships in order to engage their neighbors in services offered by Coney Island Jobs Plus; must be sociable and able to engage others in conversation. The Community Coaches work under the direct supervision of the Coney Island Jobs Plus Program Manager.
Responsibilities shall include, but not be limited to the following:
1. Serve as a paid member of Coney Island Jobs Plus to market various aspects of the Jobs Plus program to ensure residents of Coney Island Houses 1, and Coney Island Houses 1 (Site 4&5) are informed and encouraged to enroll in the program. Marketing shall consist of but not be limited to door-to-door flier distribution, posting information, word-of-mouth, social media, hosting events, and community events. Conduct home visits, office visits, and/or phone contact, as directed.
2. Act as a liaison between residents and the Jobs-Plus team. Provide factual information to encourage residents' participation and dispel any challenges that could impact the programs' success.
3. Assist in hosting resident orientations and workshops to engage and inform residents about the JOBS-Plus program and its' services.
4. Work in collaboration with the Jobs Plus staff and its' community partners to create innovative outreach strategies to attract and retain residents' participation in the Jobs Plus program.
5. Inform residents about employment, training, education and economic development opportunities that are available through Coney Island Jobs Plus. Assist with surveys to build a strong understanding of community priorities. Identify resident needs and issues and make recommendations to Jobs Plus team regarding unmet needs and/or program adjustments.
6. Provide input on strategies for creating an environment in the housing developments that encourages work and engagement in the community.
7. Serve as a mentor to residents to help them achieve their goals. Provide informal peer-to-peer coaching to assist residents who require guidance and/or experiencing crises.
8. Assist Coney Island Jobs Plus Staff to plan, coordinate and implement internal and external events, networking meetings, job fairs, and other special events and programs.
9. Market the Jobs Plus Earned Income Disallowance (JPEID) program and other incentives.
10. Attend staff meetings and trainings.
11. Complete appropriate documentation as required, maintain organized filing system, and submit all paperwork to supervisor on time.
12. Flexible work hours are required and include occasional evening and weekend work.
13. Perform other duties as assigned.

The ability to understand and carry out simple instructions; in some cases the ability to speak Spanish may be required. There are no formal education requirements for this position.
