Community Educator (Generation With Promise) - Macomb County

The Generation With Promise (GWP) program works with students and families, teachers and schools, community and faith-based organizations so that healthy change comes from within the community. This Community Educator will work in Macomb County, with a home base at Henry Ford Macomb hospital.  Travel in the community is expected to deliver the education to priority populations in Macomb County.  The education is wellness focused with a strong focus on nutrition and physical activity and the person selected for this role will be comfortable delivering education to the community.

GENERAL SUMMARY:

The Community Educator will assists with all activities for the school and community-based health education program, Generation With Promise (GWP), under direction from the GWP Program Manager and Senior Project Coordinator. Responsibilities include providing nutrition education and physical activity promotion targeting youth and families eligible for supplemental nutrition assistance education (SNAP-Ed) in underserved school and community settings, assisting with facilitation of groups and sessions focused on nutrition/physical activity promotion as assigned, and participating in GWP team meetings. Ability to cultivate relationships with schools, students, and community and faith-based organizations through speaking engagements, nutrition education and physical activity promotion presentations and other activities, as well as providing nutrition education training to students, adults and teachers, as required. 

This position may be responsible for implementing the PE-Nut program and/or supporting Student Action Teams. Additional responsibilities include assisting in project activities focusing on school and community-based health programming with particular emphasis on programming addressing reduction of health & healthcare disparities; and assisting with presentations.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Multi-task, provide close communication with supervisors, and interact with both internal and external customers at all levels and other HFH departments. Conduct nutrition education, physical activity demonstrations, and role modeling for teachers. Compile data for fact sheets and reporting. Use evaluation tools. Work with cultural competency/health disparities interventions to improve care for underrepresented racial and ethnic populations. Use strong computer skills, organizational skills, and written/verbal communication skills to represent the program in a professional manner.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

Requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Public Health, Health Education, Nutrition, Health Administration or a closely-related field. OR a bachelor’s degree in another field and the equivalent experience in a related field. One to two years of experience in coordinating health initiatives with youth, school-based or community projects, after-school programming, and/or parent programs.  Master’s degree preferred. Experience compiling nutrition education and physical activity promotion curricula and materials, coordinating taste testing events and cooking demonstrations, working with school administrators, teachers and students, coordinating meetings, and collaborating with partners is preferred.
