About the Role: The City of Durham’s Neighborhood Improvement Services (NIS) is seeking a dedicated Community Engagement Strategist to strengthen relationships, support community-led initiatives, and ensure equitable engagement across historically underinvested communities. This position serves as a connector between residents, community groups, City departments, and local organizations to foster trust, collaboration, and positive change. Why Join Us? Duties/Responsibilities + Serve as the first point of contact for residents, community groups, and partner organizations, providing guidance, resources, and support. + Build trust and strong relationships with community leaders and local groups, particularly within historically underinvested populations. + Collect and analyze data (both quantitative and qualitative) to identify community needs and share insights with City staff. + Collaborate with residents and partners to design and implement inclusive community engagement and organizing strategies. + Plan, coordinate, and implement program activities, events, and initiatives to encourage community participation. + Use a variety of tools, including social media and virtual platforms, to share information and connect with the community effectively. + Support community members through facilitation, training, and leadership development to enhance local engagement efforts. + Partner with City departments to align engagement goals and develop strategies that address community needs. + Manage multiple projects simultaneously, track progress, and provide regular updates and reports. Knowledge of: + Relationship-building and community outreach strategies. + Racial equity principles, including an understanding of historically underinvested communities. + Data collection methods and analysis of community feedback. + Tools and platforms for both low-tech and high-tech community engagement. + Event planning and coordination to facilitate community gatherings and programs. Skill in: + Establishing trust and working collaboratively with residents and stakeholders. + Effectively communicating complex concepts in clear, simple language. + Project management, including handling multiple tasks, setting goals, and tracking progress. + Partnering with diverse community members to organize and implement inclusive engagement strategies. + Using technology, including social media and virtual meeting platforms, to connect and engage communities. Minimum Qualifications & Experience + Bachelor’s degree in business or public administration or directly related field + Two years of professional program administration and/or analytical experience in area of assignment. Additional Preferred Skills + Experience in community organizing, engagement, or outreach with a focus on equity and inclusion. + Demonstrated success connecting with and building relationships in historically underinvested communities. + Experience planning and implementing events, programs, or outreach initiatives. + Strong customer service and problem-solving skills. + Experience with both qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis. + Project management experience, including the ability to adapt to changing timelines and priorities. + Ability to work collaboratively across departments and within diverse community settings. + Effectively communicate with diverse groups in both English and Spanish, including occasional informal interpretation and translation.
