Community Engagement Fellow

Occupational Summary

 

The Community Engagement Fellow is a one-year post-graduate opportunity centering hands-on learning in community engagement programming, advising and administration with the Center for Community Engagement (DCCE), part of the Duke Office of Community Affairs (DCA). DCA coordinates opportunities for the campus to serve with local organizations, provides learning opportunities and resources reflecting best practices, and fosters academic and community collaborations.

 

This position focuses on programming and coordination to support campus capacity for effective practices in community engagement and connecting the broader campus with opportunities to partner with communities. This includes offering consultations, trainings, technical assistance and navigation of resources in collaboration with the Center’s Senior Program Coordinator and supporting the student group Duke Partnership for Service. The emphasis for this role is serving students, faculty, staff, student organizations, campus programs and organizational units at Duke.

 

This position works closely with the Senior Program Coordinator for Campus Engagement and reports to the Senior Director of Community Engagement. 

 

Programming 45%

Collaborate with staff to develop or facilitate civic engagement workshops, trainings, and programming Coordinate communications related to the unit, including social media, newsletter content and other marketing materials Represent the unit at various activities, events and meetings as appropriate Provide logistical support for DCA/DCCE events, reserve space, order food, maintain participant lists and handle other tasks to prepare and implement events and meetings Support Duke Student Government DCA committee students in coordination of the Fireside Chat regular dinners and corresponding events Contribute to special projects as assigned Coordinate award and recognition processes for campus civic engagement to celebrate individual and institutional commitments toward engagement and partnerships

 

Advising 35%

Advise, guide and provide technical assistance to students, faculty, staff, student organizations, campus programs and organizational units through community engagement opportunities or projects Refine and implement an effective strategy and structure to advise student leaders and student organization in civic engagement efforts Support Duke Partnership for Service student leaders and other service organization members in aligned activities relating to community engagement Participate in outreach efforts to involve campus constituents in civic engagement

Administration 20%

Gather, synthesize, and organize information as requested by Senior Director of Community Engagement and North Carolina Leadership Forum Team Serve as a liaison to faculty, staff, student and community partners by prioritizing and responding to and resolving email, phone or in-person inquiries Manage Center of Community Engagement Help Desk in East Campus office and support students on-site as needed Meet weekly with supervisor, attend team meetings and all-staff meetings within Durham and Community Affairs Collaborate with the Director of Communications on all communications outlets to ensure all efforts align with Durham and Community Affairs standards

 

Qualifications

Education and training: Work requires analytical, communications and organizational skills generally acquired through completion of a bachelor’s degree program.

Experience: 1-2 years of work experience related to higher education and/or community engagement, community-based programs, or other types of programs relevant to the duties of this position.

Skills: Demonstrated skills in community-based approaches, program administration and management, student advising, assessment and evaluation, exceptional written and verbal communication skills.

Anticipated Pay Range:

 

 

Duke University provides an annual base salary range for this position as USD $18.00 to USD $22.39.
