ROLE PURPOSE
The purpose of the Community Engagement Officer role is to facilitate a robust community engagement strategy, with a particular focus on building and maintaining strong relationships with host communities. This role is critical for securing and sustaining the mine’s social license to operate by addressing community concerns, fostering dialogue, and supporting the company’s socio-economic development initiatives.
The position has become necessary following the promotion of the previous officer to the Stakeholder and Land Management Superintendent role, leaving a gap in the department structure. Filling this role is essential to ensure continuous and effective community engagement, allowing the company to maintain positive relations with its surrounding communities while driving forward its social responsibility goals.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:
Safety: Ensure compliance with Safety KPIs including where applicable: • Critical Controls Review Positive / Hazards Observation and Reporting Risks Assessment for all tasks and ensuring they are controlled before and during task execution. Reporting all incidents and ensuring they have been investigated and corrective actions completed on time Acting on all corrective actions assigned and ensuring timely completion Environment: Enforce environmental work procedures issued by the Departmental Manager including where applicable: Investigating environmental incidents in assigned work areas and preparing reports with recommendations for the Departmental Manager for onward submission to the Environmental Manager or his representative Attending all scheduled and assigned environmental training meetings. Acting on employee environmental complaints and suggestions Community Engagement: Act as the primary liaison between the company and local communities. Facilitate open communication channels to address community concerns and needs, ensuring alignment with the company’s goals. Grievance Management: Handle community grievances promptly and professionally. Work with various stakeholders to resolve issues and track the effectiveness of grievance redress mechanisms. Stakeholder Relations: Support to develop and maintain strong relationships with community leaders, local authorities, NGOs, and other stakeholders. Foster collaboration to support local development initiatives. Awareness Programs: Support the designing and implementation of community awareness programs on the company’s activities, policies, and social initiatives. Community Development: Support the planning, execution, and monitoring of community development projects, ensuring alignment with the company’s sustainability and social responsibility objectives. Conflict Resolution: Mediate disputes between the company and communities, helping to maintain harmonious relationships. Reporting: Prepare reports on community engagement activities, including tracking community concerns, grievances, and resolutions using digital tools. Event Management: Organize community outreach events, forums, and workshops to foster dialogue and engagement. Communications: Develop and deliver clear and culturally appropriate communication materials to inform communities about ongoing projects, updates, and opportunities.
QUALIFICATION, EXPERIENCE AND TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES

Qualification:
Relevant tertiary qualifications in social sciences or related fields.
Experience:
Minimum of 3 years’ experience working in the mining sector with an understanding of both local and global stakeholder dynamics. Proven experience in preparing standard reports and delivering presentations, with proficiency in using digital technology tools for data analysis, communication, and documentation. Previous involvement in designing and implementing communication strategies or marketing, particularly for community outreach. Experience in handling and resolving grievances, including managing stakeholder expectations, and fostering dialogue. Willingness to occasionally work out of hours and on weekends.
Skilled knowledge:
Knowledge of internationally applicable standards relevant to sustainable development (ICMM, IFC, ESG, and SDG on Social Performance, VPSHR, GEITI, etc.) Excellent interpersonal skills, capable of building trust and rapport with diverse communities and stakeholders. Ability to negotiate matters of confidentiality and potential sensitivity with tact and a clear understanding of the issues at stake. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to address community issues with practical solutions.
