What you’ll be doing

As a Community Investment Officer, you’ll manage and expand CIBC’s Community Development investment portfolio. You’ll act as a lead originator for key investment products such as Low-Income Housing Tax Credits (LIHTCs), Small Business Investment Companies (SBICs), Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs), and other impactful community development activities.

This role includes sourcing, underwriting, closing, and managing investments while ensuring portfolio administration and compliance. You’ll evaluate new opportunities, represent CIBC at community events, and work on initiatives to improve processes and expand product offerings.

How you’ll succeed

Originate impactful investments: Source and underwrite new Community Development investments, conducting detailed financial analysis, due diligence, and modeling returns.

Deliver strong presentations: Prepare and present investment opportunities to the CRA Investment Committee and, when required, Credit Risk Management.

Ensure portfolio excellence: Oversee the evaluation and administration of the assigned investment portfolio, including detailed annual reviews and ongoing maintenance.

Build strong relationships: Maintain clear communication with internal and external stakeholders to ensure smooth processing and management of investments.

Drive innovation: Lead projects and initiatives that expand product offerings, improve efficiency, or implement new procedures.

Represent CIBC in the community: Attend and participate in community development functions and forums, including some evening and weekend events.


Who you are

Experienced professional: You have 3–5 years of experience in community development investment or lending, commercial real estate lending, or similar roles.

Knowledgeable in community development: You’re familiar with the Community Reinvestment Act (CRA) and Community Development Finance.

Highly analytical: You have advanced financial analysis skills and are proficient in Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.

Strong communicator: You excel in both verbal and written communication and have experience presenting to investment or credit committees.

Detail-oriented and organized: You can manage multiple tasks and timelines effectively while maintaining a high level of accuracy.

Relationship-focused: You’re committed to community development and thrive on building and maintaining relationships.

Educationally grounded: You hold a bachelor’s degree (required) and possibly a master’s degree (preferred), with formal credit training being a plus.

• A well-maintained and growing portfolio of Community Development investments.
• Successful presentation and approval of new investment opportunities.
• Strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders that support seamless investment processes.
• Active representation of CIBC at community development events, raising the bank’s profile in the communities it serves.
• Successful completion of ad hoc projects that expand and enhance CIBC’s Community Development efforts.

At CIBC, we offer a competitive total rewards package.  This role has an expected salary range of $110,000 - $150,000 for the Chicago, market based on experience, qualifications, and location of the position.  The successful candidate may be eligible to participate in the relevant business unit’s incentive compensation plan, which also may include a discretionary bonus component.

Candidates hired to work in other locations will be subject to the pay range associated with that location. Additional total compensation and benefits details will be provided during the hiring process.
