Join us and design your place with Stantec.

Your Opportunity

This is a hybrid role with a focus on mechanical engineering applications with computational design interests. As a Mechanical Engineer you will work with guidance and direction on tasks and smaller projects, and as a team member of a larger project under the guidance of a Senior Engineer. You will participate in the evaluation, recommendation, and specification for engineered systems or products for a project verifying compliance with applicable codes and engineering standards / practices. In addition to that, you will split your time to work on design computation tasks under the guidance of a Computational Design Lead for engineering. You will be developing design concepts, documentation (plans, elevations, sections) and details for projects with a focus on incorporating computational design efficiencies to streamline project documentation and design optioneering. You will be assisting with innovative and creative digital solutions developing dynamo and grasshopper scripts for use on all projects where applicable and grow depository of scripts to help other designers adopt computational design on projects office wide.

Your Key Responsibilities

Conducts basic interpretations of drawings, codes, and other similar materials. Performs Revit design for the mechanical discipline using knowledge of relevant software programs. Works with architectural, interior, and other engineering disciplines in the coordination of the project under the direction of a senior engineer/ designer. Performs field work as directed by a senior engineer/ designer. Performs basic calculations to analyze and design individual building mechanical system components using company standard software and proprietary manufacturer software. Assists with engineering duties on projects of various complexity. Assists with collecting data and gathering information to support design decisions. Performs other duties as assigned by the senior engineering staff. Developing dynamo scripts for implementation on projects focusing on the automation of design & documentation tasks. Researching and implementing various applications of computational design methodologies working closely with the design automation team and the engineering computational design lead. Deliver data visualization and related outputs to support engineering design decision making. Collaborate with Computational Design Lead to assess office needs and develop workflows. Disseminate working solutions to practitioners and provide resources and/or training specific to the developed computational solutions.

Your Capabilities and Credentials

Proficient in CADD with basic understanding of Revit, AutoCAD, and/or Rhino, and the use of it as a drafting/design tool. Ability to participate and collaborate in project team setting and to engage in creative and critical thought. Thorough understanding of mechanical engineering concepts and ability to effectively communicate ideas to others. Ability to interpret sketches, drawings, building program and other similar material. Ability to take direction, follow process and accept feedback and suggestions from Senior Engineers. Requires understanding of Microsoft Office Suite, Revit, AutoCAD. Strong competency in visual scripting tools such as Dynamo and Grasshopper. Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, C#, and experience with API integration for design software is preferred but not required. Knowledge of building information modeling (BIM) concepts, workflows, and interoperability with computational design tools. Ability to research and implement new technologies and algorithms appropriate to enhance project goals. Prefer experience with IES VE, Ladybug tools, Pollination, EnergyPlus and any additional similar environmental simulation tools and platforms.

Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Engineering required & EIT preferred. Minimum of 0-2 years of experience. Co-op/Internship experience preferred.

Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.
