The position is located at the Department of Transportation Headquarters in Newington. The Roadway Information Systems Section is responsible for the collection, analysis, and dissemination of roadway transportation data including vehicle volumes, classifications, travel speeds, and truck weigh-in-motion, and the collection of roadway attribution. Transportation data and information are necessary to assess and predict roadway network performance, keep an accurate accounting of miles of road and attribution, and must be done in order to comply with Federal regulations. Detailed transportation data are needed for capital project support, for funding allocation, and for Federal reporting purposes. THE ROLE: This position requires working collaboratively with other offices within the Department of Transportation, as well as other public entities, collecting, modeling, enhancing, and expanding the Roadway Inventory features and assets that are contained within the network. This position will also assist in collection of data from a variety of sources and managing that information utilizing large databases. Duties of increasing difficulty will involve performing setup and operation of state-of-the-art vision, radar, and transportation data collection devices; collecting, analyzing and processing vehicle volumes, speeds, classifications (types of vehicles) and truck weigh-in-motion data; using advanced computer aided technology. This position may involve the use of and maintenance of precision sensing equipment, using electronics, radar, cameras, inductive loops, piezo, and other pressure sensitive devices, and scheduling and designing traffic count studies.
