Who We Are:

The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) is the state agency responsible for ensuring clean air, land, and water, the safe management of toxics and hazards, the recycling of solid and hazardous wastes and the preservation of the state's wetlands and coastal resources.

Who We Serve:

Massachusetts was the first state in the nation to combine energy and environmental agencies under one Cabinet secretary. The Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs (EOEEA) serves Commonwealth residents interested in outdoor recreational activities, clean energy solutions and those who work with animals and livestock. Equally, EOEEA works with energy consumers, power companies, clean energy providers and farmers to delicately balance the interaction with environmental protection laws and regulations while being a cornerstone for our economic prosperity.

The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection, seeks applicants for the position of Contracted Student Intern – Northeast Regional Wastewater Program to perform the following duties:

Northeast Region Wastewater Program- Wastewater Compliance and Enforcement Data Compilation

MassDEP's Northeast Regional Office serves 84 cities and towns (listed below) located in northeastern Massachusetts. The region spans from the New Hampshire border south through metropolitan Boston to Quincy and is bounded on the west by a line that extends roughly from Ashland to Westford.

The intern will assist in populating data in an electronic tracking system for enforcement actions by searching paper and electronic files and entering information into tracking system. Assist in tracking compliance with inspection requirements for large septic systems regulated by MassDEP. Assist in compiling other sources of data to support the wastewater program. Attend field visits to inspect wastewater treatment facilities and collect water quality samples and assist in the collection of water quality samples.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with Microsoft Excel and Word.Knowledge of water quality issues.Ability to work independently, and in an organized manner with strong attention to detail.Ability to understand and apply the regulations, policies, and procedures governing assigned activities.Knowledge of relevant science and technology concepts.
