Pay Range

$159,330 - $204,636 Annually for the SES.3 level

$191,220 - $245,544 Annually for the SES.4 level

Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. Many factors are taken into consideration when setting starting pay including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity.

Job Description

We have an opening for a Control System Engineer to participate in the development and implementation of distributed process control systems for the Strategic Deterrence (SD) program and its support facilities at LLNL’s Site 300. The successful candidates will work with physicists, engineers, computer scientists, and external vendors. This position will report to the Process Controls Group Leader in the National Security Engineering Division (NSED) within the Engineering directorate.

You will 

Develop the control system approach and coordinate the efforts and activities of the control system team for Site 300 firing facilities, working with the Site 300 firing operations and facility management teams to determine priorities.Follow the System Engineering process in the implementation of applications and control systems to meet the needs of Site 300 firing facility experiments.Produce system documentation and control system architectures.Conduct Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEAs) of subject control systems and leading design reviews.Lead, direct, and oversee the Site 300 firing facility controls team, leveraging controls and other expertise at Site 300.Ensure the reliability, safe operation, and continuing advancement of Site 300 firing facility control systems, including the Contained Firing Facility (CFF), the Outdoor Firing Facility (OFF), and the Flash X-ray Radiography (FXR) diagnostic accelerator.Develop complex applications using Wonderware, LabVIEW, Programmable Automation Controllers (PACs), etc., and deploying these systems into the lab and the field, following defined configuration management processes.Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional job responsibilities, at the SES.4 level

Update the control system architecture to match industry improvements and standards.Mentor controls team members to conduct design reviews, follow the System Engineering process, and improve control system quality.Mentor and train controls team members in the development of reliable and maintainable control systems development, following applicable internal and external standards. Qualifications Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.Bachelors in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.Advanced knowledge and significant experience in development of embedded controls, data acquisition, and computer interfacing.Experience with the application, use, and programming of distributed control systems and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisitions (SCADA) systems.Significant experience with the system and software engineering process for generation of requirements, design documents, configuration control, and preparation of test plans and user documentation.Experience working effectively in a dynamic, multidisciplinary team environment, which includes working with scientists, engineers, technicians, and designers.Experience with tools used for troubleshooting electrical systems (oscilloscopes, multimeters, etc.)Advanced verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical information and provide advice to management.Availability to work occasional on call and/or shift work.

Additional qualifications at the SES.4 level

Subject matter expertise or certification in developing for Modicon PLCs, Wonderware InTouch, Wonderware System Platform, or LabVIEW.Experience in object-oriented programming design and languages (e.g., C++, Java, C#).Experience with software programming in configuration management environments (e.g., SVN, Git, change controls).Significant experience in the design and development of control system architectures using the system engineering process, including conducting design reviews and hazard analysis processes such as Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA).Expert verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical information and advise senior management and/or external sponsors.

Qualifications We Desire

Masters in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science or equivalent combination of education and related experience. Additional Information

Site 300

Site 300 is an experimental test site operated by LLNL.  Situated on 7,000 acres in rural foothills approximately six miles southwest of downtown Tracy and 15 miles southeast of Livermore, Site 300 hosts approximately 200 employees with expertise in such fields as engineering, chemistry, biology, and environmental restoration. Employees assigned to work at Site 300 may be exposed to the organism that causes San Joaquin Valley Fever (coccidioidomycosis).

Security Clearance

This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.  If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. Also, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.  Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.
