Summary:
The Controller will oversee the financial operations and accounting functions of our orthopedic physician group practice. This position will be responsible for maintaining the accuracy of the financial statements, ensuring regulatory compliance, managing day-to-day financial operations, and providing strategic financial insight to the leadership team. The ideal candidate will have strong experience in healthcare finance, with a specific understanding of medical practice accounting and reporting.
Key Responsibilities:
Financial Reporting & Analysis:
· Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements for review by the CFO and leadership team
· Monitor and analyze practice revenues, expenses, and other key financial metrics to ensure financial health
· Provide detailed financial analysis, including variance analysis and recommendations for improving financial performance
Budgeting & Forecasting:
· Lead the budgeting process and financial forecasting for the practice
· Work with department heads to ensure accurate and realistic budget submissions
· Provide ongoing support and guidance to ensure adherence to budget targets
Cash Management:
· Oversee cash flow management, ensuring the practice has sufficient liquidity for daily operations
· Ensure timely billing and collection of outstanding accounts receivable
Accounts Payable/Receivable:
· Supervise accounts payable and accounts receivable functions, ensuring accurate and timely processing of invoices, payments, and collections
· Work with practice managers and administrators to resolve discrepancies or issues
Compliance & Internal Controls:
· Ensure compliance with all relevant federal, state, and local regulations, including Medicare/Medicaid billing practices, healthcare compliance regulations, and tax requirements
· Establish and maintain internal controls to safeguard the organization’s assets
Audit & Tax Preparation:
· Coordinate with external auditors for annual audits and ensure the practice’s financial records are prepared for audit
· Oversee tax filings and ensure timely filing of all required tax documents (e.g., payroll taxes, corporate taxes)
Team Leadership & Training:
· Manage and mentor a small team of accounting staff, providing ongoing training and support
· Promote continuous improvement in financial reporting processes
System Management:
· Oversee financial software and ensure the accurate and efficient use of financial management tools and systems
· Recommend and implement process improvements to streamline financial reporting and operations
Qualifications:
· Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; CPA preferred
· Minimum of 5 years of accounting experience, with at least 2 years in a healthcare setting, preferably in an orthopedic or medical practice environment
· Strong knowledge of healthcare financial practices, billing, and reimbursement processes
· Experience with accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Sage, or practice management software)
· Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills
· Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment
· Strong attention to detail, with a commitment to accuracy and deadlines
· Knowledge of regulatory compliance requirements for medical practices (e.g., HIPAA, Medicare/Medicaid billing)
Additional Skills:
· Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
· Strong leadership and interpersonal skills
· Ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize effectively
· Experience with financial reporting and budgeting for a physician group or healthcare organization
Working Conditions:
· Full-time, with potential for occasional evening or weekend hours during peak financial periods
· Office environment with occasional travel to other practice locations
Physical Requirements:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to sit and/or stand for prolonged periods, work longer than eight (8) hour shifts, and to work both day/evening shifts. Work may hand dexterity as well as the need to reach, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, talk, and hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 lbs. While performing the responsibilities of the job, the employee is required to talk and hear. Environmental/Working Conditions:
Work is performed in an office environment. Involves frequent personal and telephone contact with patients and with testing sites and surgery departments. Work may be stressful at times. Interaction with others is constant and interruptive. Contact involves dealing with injured sick people.
