Controller - High Rise

Job Overview:

 

The Regional Controller is a key company leader who ensures the accurate, timely and efficient delivery of financial information to FirstService Residential clients in assigned regions.  The Company operates under 5 Regions within the CA market, and each Region’s Associates reports into the Controller.  FirstService Residential supports hundreds of clients within CA in the area of property, community and Association management, and works closely with the On-Site Property Managers, the Board Members, and the rest of the Accounting, AR and AP Staff to ensure timely, accurate financial statement reporting.

 

The Regional Controller is the “go to” person for any client financial issues and needs to have an excellent working knowledge of GAAP accounting.   The Regional Controller has direct oversight over their regional General Ledger staff; and ultimate accountability for all Client Accounting service and deliverables.   

 

Compensation: $100-120k

 

FirstService Residential will compensate the successful candidate in accordance with the posted range. The salary or wage paid to the successful candidate will be commensurate with experience, education, and specific job responsibilities. For positions designated at a client's property, the salary or wage will also be premised upon the client's directive. The base pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future.

 

Job Responsibilities:

 

Financial Reporting Direct the efforts of the regional General Ledger staff to ensure monthly financial statements are prepared in a timely and accurate manner.  Establish monthly due dates for the financials and distribute to the Community Managers at the beginning of each month. Perform a detailed review of client financial statements each month and identify potential errors or areas of risk including variances to budget, linkage to supporting schedules, lingering bank reconciliation items, cash shortages, investment management opportunities. Troubleshoot any accounting or reporting issues in collaboration with the Community Manager or leadership team as needed. Listen to clients, plan for their changing needs, monitor client satisfaction and follow up on client inquiries, requests, or complaints. Analyze and implement agreements between entities and manage communication among parties and attorneys. Identify implementation challenges and work with all parties to resolve. Approve monthly Reserve Funding and other cash management transfers initiated by the general ledger staff accountants. 

Planning & Budgeting

Upon request, assist the Community Manager with annual budgeting and required civil code disclosures. Ensure the Community Manager has the appropriate tools to bring before the board. Review / challenge reserve studies when warranted. Upon request, review the budgets before they are sent to the homeowners and entered into the Client Accounting system. Specifically watch for issues related to variable assessment budgets and communities transitioning from the DRE budget. Identify trends early and develop plans to mitigate risks and reduce client “surprises”. Prepare multi-year cash flow analyses as needed or appropriate. 

Leadership

Select, train and develop a highly productive team. Create an environment that provides direction and promotes continuous learning and development.  Provide accurate, motivating feedback and constructive criticism.  Promote hard work in others by setting the example. Ensure the transaction processing team provides timely and accurate financial reports by defining and enforcing appropriate service level standards. Client retention is a key measure of success, so performance issues need to be surfaced with functional management as soon as possible. Model FirstService Residential Global Service Standards in every aspect of the job. Promote excellence in others by meeting company standards of quality. Provide ad-hoc training to Community Managers as needed.  Attend Board/Finance Committee meetings when appropriate. The Regional Controller is the “face” of FirstService Residential and needs to be able to present important issues to the client along with appropriate recommendations. Sees matters from the clients’ perspective as well as the companies’ perspective to find approaches that work for both. Adept at handling contentious situations and managing change. Build organizational and industry relationships. Promote collaboration and remove obstacles to teamwork across the organization.  

Growth

Manage the set-up of new accounts. Ensure account information is set-up accurately in Jenark.  Ensure the client is happy with the financial reporting format.  Adjust as necessary. Attend sales presentations for perspective clients. Be able to inform potential and existing clients of our internal controls, investment opportunities and describe our financial statement deliverables. 

Other Duties

Special Projects as assigned by Director or VP/EVP. 

Skills & Qualifications:

 

Financial Skills Experience with GAAP Accounting. Excellent Financial reporting and analytical skills. High level of proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Word and Excel. Ability to perform multi Excel functions including VLOOKUP, SUMIF, Pivot Tables, etc. 

Excellent Written and Verbal Communication

Writes clearly and succinctly in a variety of communication settings and styles. Can get messages across that have the desired effect. Ability to crystallize thought and anticipate roadblocks. Able to rally commitment and buy-in. Listens attentively; communicates clearly and often. 

Education & Experience:

BA/BS in Accounting Public Accounting (Audit) experience or CPA license preferred

 

Physical Requirements & Working Environment:

Must be able to lift 25 lbs. Must be able to sit for extended periods of time. Must have finger dexterity for typing/using a keyboard. Talking and hearing occur continuously in the process of communicating with guests, supervisors, vendors and our clients Valid California Driver's License and State mandated vehicle insurance, and registration. Ability to walk extensive slope and/or flat association areas and visually review landscape, building areas, recreation facilities, parks etc. to ensure proper maintenance. Ability to work late into evenings as required for board meeting attendance.  Due to the nature of the position, it will be necessary for the employee to work the hours necessary to attend Board meetings and to complete time sensitive deadlines. This position will require traveling to other offices and to Board meetings. Consistent and regular attendance required. 

Supervisory Responsibility:

Supervise General Ledger staff assigned to the Region. Ensure transaction processing personnel meet all service level expectations and escalate / resolve any performance issues with the appropriate Supervisors.
