Controls Leader - Corporate Engineering Leader

 

 

 

 

 

     

PURPOSE OF THE JOB

 

The Roofing Controls Leader (RCL) safely champions development and execution of Roofing controls systems and automation aligned with the Roofing business strategy. The RCL and their team are accountable for driving value through innovative application of new and existing controls, as well as automating technologies leading to improved plant performance.

 

The RCL focuses on 3 leadership pillars: Standards, Technology, and Talent. The pillars are the foundation of the controls management process for the Roofing division. The RCL has 4-6 direct reports and works closely with the Reliability, Productivity, and Process Leaders in Roofing.

 

Standards: Creates and sustains a learning culture, where best practices are shared and implemented across the roofing business for controls programs, PLC and HMI revisions, and early warning diagnostics programs (EWD). Partners with operations, maintenance, S&T, and capital delivery (along with alliance partners) to deploy solutions that improve quality, reduce cost, enhance stability, and increase capacity.

 

Technology: Guides the Roofing project portfolio, delivering value through new technology opportunities, resource leveraging, controls optimization, and project execution. Prevents obsolescence and utilizes Ignition and Asset Center to improve plant performance.

 

Talent: Accelerates growth and opportunity for talent to meet Roofing business demands and vision through hiring talent, aggressive development, and stretch assignments for EWD and controls employees.

 

Reports to: Director – Division Operations, Roofing Business

 

Travel 30-40% (up to 50% depending on business demand and logistics)

 

 

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Ensures a safe and environmentally compliant workplace where safety is a first priority Sustainability and Environmental Compliance / Stewardship Clear understanding and implementation of control reliable technology within our operations. Define where gaps are and the requirements for control equipment from both an implementation and sustainability standpoint

 

 

Controls and Automation Standards

Defines standards for existing and new PLC programs in terms of sequence and control layout Controls team responsible for being SME’s (subject matter experts) for PLC programming and control systems for the Roofing Division Manages revision control for HMI’s, PLC’s, Labview, Ignition, Factory Talk, and other programming languages Partner with Capital team, SME’s, and Alliance partners to standardize and revise PLC and HMI programs (Ignition) on all Capital projects  Partner with division electrical specialists to support standardization of controls and replacement plans before obsolescence Utilizes EWD and Asset Center digital tools to create plant standards for performance and aggressively shares best practices between plants Support roofing plants with controls failures and troubleshooting as needed Life cycle management and ownership of key control and automation systems: DMC systems, IP21, Braincube, Ignition, HMI’s, networks, sensors, etc.

Technology and Innovation Management

Defines standards for commissioning new controls and automation technology and equipment, asset health and performance monitoring, and operator/maintenance functional requirements and self-diagnostics. Includes dashboards for Ignition and Braincube with commissioning.   Selection and specification of new technology components while partnering with the Innovation team, Capital Team, and Alliance partners Monitor and support data historian infrastructure for all Roofing plants with IT support Ensure data historian record length is adequate for environmental and legal purposes Ensure protocol for new IP21 tags and topic names are followed on new projects and capital installs Provide solutions to manufacturing recurring problems using Braincube and Ignition, as well as lead the technology integration across the Division Develop business cases for new technologies and analytical tools partnered with the Capital Delivery Team, Automation Team and R&D Innovation Team as needed

 

Leading and Developing Talent

Leads the Controls Engineering organization in Roofing to effectively create value in the Roofing business Leads talent development, training, and builds open, trusting environment that promotes listening, respect, winning, and fun Defining and tracking technical skills required to manage our controls and automation infrastructure Supporting a development and training program that matches our controls and automation talent growth while supporting the long term strategy of a regional model diagnostics center (RMDC) Develop and mentor site electrical leads based on need and years of experience in the plant Create succession planning strategy for controls engineers Ensure Controls team is improving technical skills through training, webinars, certifications, etc as needed especially with new analytical tools and technologies Conduct training for maintenance leaders and technical leaders regarding controls and new equipment as needed Defining and vetting strategic partners within controls and automation in partnership with the Capital Delivery Team, Automation Team and the R&D Innovation Team as needed

 

JOB REQUIREMENTS

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

 

B.S. in engineering (mechanical, electrical, chemical, or computer science) or equivalent controls experience in manufacturing industry Minimum 6 years of relevant automation and controls experience in a manufacturing plant and/or corporate engineering role Strong knowledge and experience of PLC based controls and HMI applications (Ignition) with emphasis on Allen-Bradley including PLC programming proficiency (PLC5, SLC 500, ControlLogix, CompactLogix) Experience in transforming manufacturing facilities to an increasingly automated manifesting environment Demonstrated people leadership experience

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:

 

Strong verbal and written communication skills Statistical analysis experience and data manipulation skills Structured problem-solving skills in line with Six Sigma concepts Ability to communicate technical issues to management and customers in an effective and understandable manner Capable of matching new emerging technologies to operating needs Ability to build business cases and explain technical solution concepts to gain upper management alignment Ability to quickly analyze and implement improvements and then gauge their effectiveness Ability to deliver projects from a central solution into multiple facilities Understanding of data historian and expertise in IP21 and Ignition preferred Understanding of the pillars and principles of TPM (Total Productive Maintenance) Expertise in PLC I/O modules and troubleshooting (especially in ladder logic and components - CPU back plains, I/O boards, counters, modules, devices, communication modules, etc) Experience with upgrading legacy systems, and technology/equipment evaluation and selection Experience with point I/O, flex I/O, Profibus, Devicenet, controlnet, etc Experience and expertise with sensors and sensor software (level, pressure, temperature, proximity switches, encoders, position indication, etc) Utilize Statistical analysis software to identify data trends and patterns (ex: Ignition, MiniTab, advanced Excel, BrainCube, Asset Center, etc)
