Salary and Grade: $13.00 per hour; 72 Non-Exempt

Position Overview:

Under the advisement and direction of the Corps Officers and Shelter Director, the Cook will manage an inventory of food, maintain a clean, safe, and sanitary kitchen and storage room, and prepare two (2) balanced meals per day according to dietary guidelines.  The cook will also work closely with the Corps Officers to maintain accurate statistics on meals served and food used. 

Responsibilities

Essential Functions

Demonstrate knowledge, safety, and professionalism while working in the kitchen. Prepare quantities according to the number of individuals in attendance. Attend and participate in staff meetings and accurately follow all directives. Assist Coordinator/Corps Officers with statistics and monthly reports as directed. Attend necessary training for compliance with CACFP and Department of Health requirements. Maintain excellent records for the food program, CACFP, and Berks County Food Bank as needed. Plan and create monthly menus under CACFP program guidelines. Purchase food most cost-effectively, as guided and approved by the Corps Officers. Prepare and serve meals daily and snacks as needed. Prepare and communicate basic instructions for the menu item to other staff or volunteers as needed. Be knowledgeable regarding the Department of Health Rules and Regulations and maintain records and standards for all funding and regulatory agencies as required. Wash and adequately store dishes and utensils to maintain kitchen cleanliness standards. Maintain flexibility and work well with the Commanding Officers and others. Advise the Corps Officer in writing of any maintenance or repair concerns as needed. Complete all duties as otherwise assigned by the Corps officers.

 Additional Responsibilities

Maintain open lines of communication with Corps officers, staff, and volunteers. Adhere to all written personnel and program policies of The Salvation Army. Ensure strict adherence to all policies, including those related to confidentiality, boundary issues, and professionalism, and maintain high ethical standards with exemplary moral conduct at all times. Ensure cultural competency and practice non-bias principles. Demonstrate a kind and caring attitude.

Qualifications Bilingual English/Spanish is highly desirable.Ability to thrive in a collaborative team environment but also able to work independently.Effective time management and strong organization skills are required.Must be able to adapt, sometimes quickly, to meet the organization’s needs and the community.Valid PA Driver’s License.Prior cooking experience in institutional food preparation or restaurant setting is required.Must be able to become ServSafe certified within 60 days of hire.Child Protection Clearances PA Act 153 requires that all prospective employees complete the following clearance and background checks before employment: PA Child Abuse History Clearance, PA State Police Criminal Record Check, and FBI Criminal Record/Fingerprint Check. Meets the Child Protection Clearances required by PA Act 153 to include PA Child Abuse History Clearance, PA State Police Criminal Record Check, and FBI Criminal Record Check along with renewals every five years.Must understand and appreciate the Mission of The Salvation Army.
