Summary About the Position: This position is with the US Army Engineer District, Operations Division, Revetment Branch, Motor Vessel Mississippi. Duty location is wherever the Motor Vessel Mississippi is located. Is in direct charge of the galley and mess hall and is responsible for the preparation and serving of meals for a large crew in accordance with standard operating procedures. Responsibilities Personally participates in and supervises a crew of cooks and shipkeepers in cooking, preparing, and serving meals including meats, fish, soups, poultry, vegetables, fruits, salads, breads, cakes, and desserts; and storage of commodities. In addition, supervises subordinates in cleaning the galley, dining areas, and crew quarters. Inspects the galley, mess halls, refrigerators, and storage areas to insure they are maintained in a sanitary and orderly condition. Position must also accomplish the following administrative functions using appropriate computer programs and systems: file management, mail routing, vehicle dispatch and maintenance, time and attendance, travel, purchasing, reports, etc. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the provision of the District EEO and Affirmative Action Program. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications Work Schedule: This position requires varying shift work. During towing season, works 2 weeks on, 1 week off. Works 12 hours per day. During Mississippi River Commission trips, incumbent may be required to work 45 days straight. During Lay-up/Maintenance season, incumbent will work a 5 day 8 hr a day schedule during winter maintenance period and 4 day 10 hr a day schedule during spring maintenance period. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to supervise as a(n) Cook-Steward~ without more than normal supervision. I have the ability to perform common duties of a Cook-Steward which skills and experience to plan for and prepare a wide variety of foods for up to 150 persons. Applies the skill and knowledge to operate and maintain all galley equipment and train new subordinates and identify individual training needs. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. (includes blueprint reading) Ability To Lead or Supervise Dexterity and Safety Work Practices (includes keeping things neat, clean, and in order) Physical Effort: Incumbent is required to exert moderate to heavy physical effort storing and handling galley supplies and materials. Working Conditions: Work is performed primarily in the galley where there is constant exposure to above average temperatures. Subject to cuts when working with power equipment or to burns when working near the range. Subject to falls when food is spilled on deck, or when the vessel is in rough water. Education Additional Information Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration. You will be required to provide proof of U.S. Citizenship. One year probationary period may be required. One year supervisory probationary period may be required. Direct Deposit of Pay is required. Payment of Permanent Change of Station (PCS) costs is not authorized, based on a determination that a PCS move is not in the Government interest. This position is covered by the DOT rules and USACE ER 690-1-1218. May be subject to random alcohol and drug testing on an unannounced basis. Incumbent is required to sign a DA Form 7412, "Condition of Employment for Certain Civilian Positions Identified Safety-Sensitive Under The Department of Transportation, Federal Highway Administration Rules on Drug and Alcohol Testing" or a Memorandum of Understanding. NOTE: When clerical staff is unavailable, may be required to accomplish the following using appropriate computer programs and systems (i.e. CEFMS, DCPDS, ATMP): control, transfer and disposal of records, file management, processing and routing of incoming mail, vehicle assignment, dispatch and maintenance, time and attendance, travel, purchasing, IMPAC VISA procurement, reports, payment of financial billings, office automation for general office support and operation and labor relations compliance.
