New Student Services (NSS) oversees and coordinates pre-semester and summer orientation sessions for new students and families; welcome events at the beginning of the fall and spring semesters; and various programs, activities, and services to help students transition to and graduate from college. NSS is responsible for planning and executing the following programs and services: New Student & Family Orientation, Longhorn Welcome, First-Gen Longhorns, First-Generation Living Learning Community, Bevo Buddy, Horns Helping Horns, RGV Familia, and Longhorn TIES.

Purpose

The Coordinator of the First-Gen Longhorns program is responsible for designing, implementing, and managing a comprehensive program of monthly events tailored to support college students, focusing on first-year and first-generation students. This role involves organizing workshops and events addressing academic support, college transition, community building, financial literacy, campus navigation, and self-advocacy. Additionally, the Coordinator supervises graduate and undergraduate student staff, serves as the liaison for first-generation presentations on campus, and oversees the creation of a monthly newsletter and social media account that provides essential information and resources for all first-generation students at UT Austin.

Responsibilities

Develop and manage a calendar of monthly events designed to address critical areas such as college transition, community building, financial literacy, campus navigation, and self-advocacy for first-year first-generation students. Collaborate with campus departments and community organizations to enhance event offerings and ensure comprehensive support for first-year, first-generation students. Develop and implement strategies to increase student engagement and participation in programs and events. Manage event logistics, including budget, scheduling, venue selection, materials preparation, and promotion. Collect and analyze feedback from students to continuously improve program offerings.

Recruit, hire, train, and supervise graduate and undergraduate student staff who work to support the Success Coach mentor program for first-year, first-generation students. Provide ongoing support and professional development opportunities for undergraduate success coaches to ensure they effectively assist first-year students with their transition to college. Provide ongoing supervision and support to the graduate students who monitor and provide support for the success coaches, offering feedback and guidance as needed.

Serve as a point of contact for first-generation students who want to meet and provide guidance and support as they navigate their college experience. Develop, write, and edit engaging bi-weekly or monthly newsletter content. Create and manage content for social media accounts (e.g., Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn) tailored to first-year, first-generation students.

Assist with campus-wide programming to celebrate first-generation college students, including First-Gen Camp, First Gen Welcome, First Gen Celebration Week, First-Gen Graduation, and other annual events. This function includes marketing, communicating with campus partners, managing projects, and managing day-to-day logistics. 

Maintain accurate records of program activities, student participation, and success coach performance. Manage budget for program events and activities, ensuring effective use of resources. Prepare reports and presentations for departmental meetings, evaluations, and development opportunities. Work with Development on fundraising opportunities.

Required QualificationsMaster’s degree or at least three years of working on a college campusPassion for first-year student experience and assisting students through their college transition.Experience and comfort with presenting to groups and solid writing skills.Ability to provide quality customer service to students and families.Ability to interact professionally with staff, faculty, and stakeholders through in-person and electronic communications.Demonstrated ability to implement creative solutions and take initiative.Comfort working as part of a small team in a fast-paced environment.Ability to manage multiple projects by keeping tasks well-organized and completed on time.Ability to work collaboratively as a member of a professional team, positive attitude, teachable, and able to comply with the organization’s policies, procedures, and goals.

Must be eligible to work in the US full-time for any employer without sponsorship.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Driving Required

This job requires a class "C" operator's driver's license. The applicant selected must provide a current three year driving record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, a Texas driver's license must be obtained within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident. Employees who are required to have a CDL are subject to drug and alcohol testing (pre-employment, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, random, return-to-duty, and follow-up drug and alcohol testing).

Salary Range

$55,000 + depending on qualifications
